It would be interesting to have a Canadian Pope but I doubt that would happen. The rally cries seem to be strongest for an Italian pope as the Catholic Church seriously needs a Western European revival.

Or at least from a predominantly Catholic country like Poland, France, or Brazil.

I am both a Catholic and Polish. There are some interesting stories about Karol Woytyla (his real name). Apparently, when we was younger and travelling trough Poland, he went and met with a priest. The priest was a stigmatic, and had the wounds of Jesus on his wrists. The priest turned to him and said, "one day, you will be Pope." Interesting, if true.
Pope John Paul II was instrumental in shaping the world we live in today. He played a big role in the fall of commnism. He traveled extensively, spreading his message across the world. Some say he was willing to listen to anyone, and embraced members of all different religions.
He was also not without his critics. He took a very hard nosed approach on sexuality and women's role in the church. It will be interesting to see if his succossor will follow in his footsteps, of if he will take a more liberal approach on such issues.

The election of the pope, or rather the way they announce it with the coloured smoke has to be one of the most interesting traditions of the church. Quite the process if i remember right.

CNN is saying that he's developed a high fever. However, he is responding "correctly" to members of his household.

Rest in Peace indeed.... but we should remember not to weep over his death, but we should celebrate his life and all that he has been able to accomplish.

I wasn't aware that it was a competition.

No question...considering all the changes in the world, polticially, economically, technology wise, since 1978.
Watching the CBC mini bio, the Pope I remember is the adventerous, well travelled, always smiling person drawing the huge crowds in the 120 countires he visited.
I hope the next Pope can bring the same tireless travel, effort, and smiling face, to his Papacy around the entire world.

Not Catholic but I have nothing against the Pope hope he rests in peace. I wonder what Sinead O' Connor is doing right now?

Should we celebrate his archaic stance on contraceptives while Africa dies of AIDS?
Should we celebrate his call for western democracies to open their vaults for the poor of the world while he sits on tens of billions of dollars in assets?
Should we celebrate the continued stance that says women are second tier citizens within the Catholic Church?
He was an important figure of the 20th century and did a lot of good . . . . but he departs this earth with some ugly stuff hanging off his shoulders as well.
Measure the whole package.
Hopefully, his successor will be more liberal and willing to bring the Church forward to meet the realities of the 21st century.

We should celebrate our Holy Father and Christianity's most important figure, and be thankful the Pope, as God's representitive on earth, upholds the true teachings of the Bible..... if Christianity was left to the Jimmy Swaggards and Queen Elizabeths of this world Christanity would lose all meaning and fade away ....
