Wow, I'd give those pay raises to the senior physicians than to Stelmach's gang of rag-tag tuffs.
HOW can you justify giving yourself a raise like that, when it's clearly obvious that money is better left to compensating employees in the industry that is already incredibly sensitive in this province?
If this isn't a sign of the times, I dunno what is. This makes Alberta look ...very... bad.

This is only the begining and every public sector union will raise that same issue. I would hope that the embarrassement would cause them to resind those ridiculous raises. Somehow i doubt it will happen.
Health care will suffer due to the loss of those individuals.

Sadly, that's not untrue. Apart from the friends/family and the beautiful countryside, Alberta doesn't appeal to me as much these days. Everything seems to be run on the cheap, and without any vision or progressive thinking.

The optics are brutal, but before we make martyrs of these people I'd like to know what they're making and asking for.
Those clever kids at the doctors union are hoping for exactly the 'health care will suffer' sentiment. If the headlines were 'Docs want 100% raise' and moron MLAs hadn't given themselves their fat pay, would health care still suffer?

I think I figured out what happened earlier today with this. Last week Stelmach raised the wages of the politicians to get better people. These doctors figured out that they can work less and earn more in politics and so they are making the jump!

Yes because the market says that is what they are worth. The Drs can get paid way more elsewhere. The problem is that the politicians pay themselves. Not exactly a market situation, particularly when the opposition is the proverbial rotten fruit that does not offer a real alternative. A politician with no fear of losing is empowered to do whatever they want.

haha sorry Fotze, didn't mean to sound harsh, we're just kind of bummed out here. Wish I could comment more (damn confidentiality agreement), however, I could point to open source material. I think it was in the Edmonton journal's article where they got a comment from one of the docs leaving. Essentially, it's not about the money....wish I could say more =(

I am actually kind of impressed by this:
New Health board chair makes $550,000
Charlotte Robb, the Interim CEO of the new Alberta’s Health Services Board is earning $550,000 this year.
The fate of nine regional health CEOs, including Calgary’s Jack Davis, will be determined by next April 1, 2009, when all their contracts end.
In Calgary, the CEO of the Calgary Health Region Jack Davis earns more than $1 million a year in compensation, benefits and pension entitlements.
I think this is great news that the person potentially replacing these 9 people has a reasonable salary.
