Your kids deserve respect!

I went to my daughters Kindergarten "graduation." This school only does
pre-school and Kindergarten, so they have a party where everyone
attending graduates.

The lack of respect shown by the parents was astounding. I felt like
getting up and screaming, "Shut up! You expect your kids to shut up
and listen to you, let you talk to other, etc., yet when it comes to
15 minutes of them showing you what you learned, something they
worked VERY hard on, you can't stay off the phone for it? Or perhaps
not talk to your friends around you?!"

The people from the school tried many times to get people to shut up,
but it wasn't happening. The pre-schoolers even did their presentation
of the provinces and capitals twice, because the first time no one who
wanted to could hear them. At the age of 4, these kids went out of
their way to know the provinces and capitals of Canada, and you can't
be bothered enough to listen to them.

The whole lot of kids did Oh Canada, and even then the parents
felt they had to talk.

Fifteen minutes. That's all YOUR kids asked for. YOUR kids doing their
best to give a show, for YOU! And YOU can't be bothered.

One of the teachers had a husband involved in a bad accident, and
was pretty much in tears, she could take the time to not only teach
your kids, help in setting up the performance, come to the performance,
and yet you can't shut up for her either.

There's two distinct words I have for the parents, but I have a
feeling that ain't allowed on here.

YOUR kids deserve a helluva lot more respect than you showed.

I second that. I've been at two public functions in the last couple months where i encountered the same rudeness. One was a set of music at an indoor spring music festival, and the other was a comedian performing for an audience at a gala. In both cases it was next to impossible to hear the performers because of jerks at the back of the room who wouldn't shut up. In one case an associate of mine politely asked one of the culprits to withhold his personal conversation until after the performance, and the guy told him to go ef himself. It all comes down to a lack of respect, and I hate to see what the next generation of kids is going to be like with all the rude, inconsiderate, disrespectful adults who are setting bad examples now days. Thanks for posting this thread ... I think this is a growing problem that people need to consider and combat.

You can already see this generation. From about 12-17 year olds. They talk on the phone in the movie theatre, don't bother to help you out with the door even when they see your hands are full (I don't even expect them to have it fully open for you, just open long enough so you can get your foot in and open the damn door yourself), and they bitch out servers who make a small mistake such as forgetting their drink. I had to add that last bit because I was at dinner last week and a 13-15 year old girl bitched out her server because she forgot her drink. GAH. I'm only 22 and I don't remember our generation being allowed to act like that.

in some ways i'm loving the fact that my generation is so messed up as it makes myself look a whole lot better. I can't imagin these kids trying to get jobs/ keep jobs with their crazy me only attitude. I take pride in being a considerate, helpful, and respectful member of society so on the other hand these people frustrate me to no end as i get a bad rep because of them.

My two kids are in that age group and they aren't like that. Probably because they had some old school parenting. But you're right ... a lot of them are like that and it's because of what they've been taught, or more precisely, what they haven't been taught by their parents.

Oh it'll make for some funny stories. The thing that really gets me is most kids have this attitude that their so mature yet when something doesn't go their way and they can't fix it by complaining they go get their mommy and daddy to do the complaining for them. I find that if you have a well thought out argument and present it in a respectful way more often than not people will listen to you and help resolve the issue, but this is an idea that our generation can't seem to grasp. And don't even get me started on how know one knows the value of a dollar anymore.

Dude, we're like the same person. I'll do my best to help out people, hold the door, etc. for them. And when I see some of the wankster morons we've got walking around that are our age, I shake my head. It's unfortunate how they give us such a bad rap. Now, sometimes I do stupid things (as the burn on my leg from 2 weekends ago shows) but I do my damndest to not do that stuff in front of adults. I do my best not to swear in a public place, especially when there's kids around. Not to say I don't swear around people, I'm probably one of the most vulgar people I know. But to hear some of the stuff people say around kids is ridiculous.

As for the value of a dollar thing. I've got a friend who's had 5 jobs in the past year. 5. How is that possible. I don't think he's lasted more than a week at a couple places...always complaining about the paycheck. Shut up and do your damn job. Sure it sucks, but hey, you've got a 17000 dollar truck that you got your parents to buy you and are going to have to "pay back". He's also the one who, while he's 17 grand in debt, dropped 300 dollars in Oilers jerseys just because he wanted to. And now just bought an xbox. Gah! I just want to slap some of this generation! Actually, I want to slap most of them.

I'm not a ######, and I'm 19. Similar to the other guys my age who have posted here. Sigh. We get a bad rep out there though.

I've had five jobs in the last year though... it's really not that hard. Granted, one was seasonal just for the summer, but check it out:

March 2008 - Present: Country 105 Street Team

But I stayed at a lot of them for a while, and the two I have now are quite permanent.

it's quite simple, not enough parents these days beat their kids. if i ever did something bad enough to warrant an ass whuppin, i sure as hell never did it again. if i was rude or inconsiderate as a kid, a slap up the head put me in line real quick. but now we have kids growing up who never have a reason to fear authority because their parents refuse to discipline them and they become jackasses

I dunno. I'm 22 now aswell, but I definitely remember having a bad attitude 4 or 5 years ago, similar to the one NSFL described. I also definitely notice the same thing in the younger kids these days, whilst I've finally learned some respec'

Man, I feel bad for the kids in the OP's story.

My daughter is only 2.5. I bet it has been over a year since she discovered pride. When she accomplishes something, you can tell that she is overjoyed that she has done the job. She especially beams when she pleases her Mother and I.

Those poor kindergarten kids just wanted to make the parents proud of their kids. The parents couldnt even be bothered to pay attention. Truly a shame.

This Friday, my daughter has the final lesson in her gymnastics 'class'. All the parents are invited to attend. I'll report back on the behavior of this group of parents.

Social norms have loosened. Parents seem to think it's cool to let their kids run amok through any restaurant and get offended if someone takes issue and tells the kids to sit down. Proprietors are terrified of losing the business or getting sued for parental interference. Schools are basically neutered these days unable to discipline out of line kids for fear of Parental wrath. Consideration of other people falls a bit to the way side when it's enforced that we are supposed to be competing with others for every scrap of money we can.

Also, people born after 1983 or so have a pretty terrible reputation as being a bunch of self involved whiny dorks. It's a result of some rather soft parenting by the parents who very much were concerned with boosting their kids self esteem (more so then generations prior).

Many of these people find that their attitude needs adjustment after University or when they first enter the workforce, but others (sadly, mostly women) marry some rich oil guy and continue living like a stuck up princess.
