Stockholm and Copenhagen

Anyone been to these places?

A coworker and I are taking a trip there before some training in Munich.

Recommendations?

i've visited both as well. Really like Copenhagen. I went during Xmas time so it was cool going around Tivoli. Like Hesla said, Christiania is also very cool.

Stockholm:

Gamla Stan is the name of the Island with the old town on it.... It is one stop south on the T-Bana (Subway). Cobblestone streets, and some great museums. The Riksdag on Gamla Stan is a must see... the Parliament building there is great.

Djurgarden is an island just East of Gamla Stan ... it has a museum called the Wasa Museum (Wasamuseet) .... very intersting museum about a warship from 1628 that sunk and was recovering in 1961.

Also, if you are there in the Winter you should check out InneBandy... a sport that is similar to feild hockey, but on skates on a pitch the size of a soccer field.

Bars and nightlife ;
The Famous Ice Bar... right by T-Centralen (central station)
Medborgplatsen ... there is a big stretch of bars/pubs in this area, as well as some great restaurants
Gondolen ... Cool night club a few stops from T-Centralen ... Slussen is the station name. Lots of fun and a great view of Stockholm.

There is also a bar right on Gamla Stan ( I think on Kornhamnstorg street) ... that is in a basement and was orginally a Viking Bar in the 1400s.... you drink out of Clay pitchers and mugs and can have traditional Viking Food... but i cant find any info right now.

If you have a few days, consider going to Helsinki on the Viking Line. It is a cruise ship that costs about 50 CND a person.... Basically Leave Friday and come back on Sunday.... Cheaper booze than in Stockholm, and a great party atmosphere (young swedes like the duty free).... You also get to spend about 5 or 6 hours in Helsinki. www.vikingline.fi is where to get info

I'm flying into Stockholm on July 5th, taking a train to Copenhagen on the 9th and flying to Munich on the 13th.

Then back home on the 20th.

Haven't been to Stckholm, but Copenhagen is really cool you will have a blast.

And agreed that Christiania is a must, there are some monster dogs in that place, some other fun stuff as well!!!!

Helsa has done Stockhom for you. The Vassa museum is an absolute must in my books.

Depending on your train, if you can work it out, I'd suggest stopping in Malmo for a few hours. It's got some seriously old buildings and is a nice charming town.

If you're a fan of viking history, from Copenhagen I'd recommend a day trip to Roskilde for it's excellent viking museum. It's a "working" museum where they were/are building replicas of viking ships. I'd highly recommend it.

Hillerod was also another day trip for the Frederiksborg Castle.

In addition to the above, you should take a walk around the harbour in Stockholm to Skeppsholmen island which is a nice spot in the middle of the city with great views. I actually stayed in Stockholm on a boat where my friend was living moored at this island directly across from the Vasa Museum.

The Nobel Prize museum in Stockholm is also a must. It isn't very big but it is very cool what they have done with the space. There is a little conveyor belt on the ceiling that continuously rotates signs with information about every person who has ever won the Nobel prize.

Copenhagen is awesome. In addition to Christiana (where it is longer legal to do drugs), Nyhaven is cool and there are so many cool buildings, churchs, squares, and parks that I don't even remember the names of that my Danish friends took me to.

Let me tell you something: Pray for good weather. In Scandinavian cities when the weather is hot women flock to any open park space in the city to sunbathe, often topless. If the weather is hot while you are there you will have the best time of your life.

Let me know how Munich is when you go back. My husband and are going there in mid September for a week to pick up the car we ordered through Euro Delivery. No idea waht things are must do's in such a short period of time.

Have fun in Stockholm, kermit. There is a massive beach party in that neck of the woods around the times you've mentioned. It may be a little earlier (I remember being invited toward the end of june) but for all I know, it's like the Stampede and based purely on days and not dates. I can't vouch for the party; I had to work, but I can vouch for the Swedes.

I am apparently the minority, but I wasn't a big fan of Copenhagen (other than Christiana). There are 20 places in Europe I would rather go.

...Munich would be top 3. That city is one of my favorite places on Earth.

Stockholm is unbelievably beautiful.... Of course, I am biased, but not as biased as you may think... I have more ties with Göteborg on the Västkust of Sweden. It's Stockholm's bitter rival so me liking it that much is kind of equivilant to an Edmontonian accepting Calgary's beauty, lol.

A lot has been covered already, but I can recommend a few places out of town if you have the time while you're there. Take the ferry to Gotland in the Baltic Sea, truly an experience you won't forget. Plus, if you're a rocker, there's TONS of kick ass rock festivals in Sweden this summer (like every summer)

I am actually in Denmark right now (I was in Copenhagen this morning, in Odense now) and I was in Stockholm about a week ago. I really like Copenhagen, probably moreso then Stockholm.

In Copenhagen, the Rosenburg Palace was real nice. I really enjoyed the Danish Resistance Museum as well. More then anything though, I just enjoyed the ambiance of Copenhagen. Christinania was also pretty interesting. I am headed off to Ærøskøbing tomorrow, which I heard is real nice.

Stockholms Old Town was real nice as well (Gamla Stan). I think Helsa has that covered above. More then anything though, coming into Stockholm via boat was stunningly beautiful.

I thought I'd give my 2 cents after coming back from Denmark where I was for 2 weeks. I got to go to Copenhagen (København), Odense, Svendborg, Nyport Ærøskobing ("Er-OOH-sh-KER-bing").

Copenhagen is worth 3-4 days IMO. I would recommend a stroll down Støget starting at city hall (Get off at København H station) and go towards Christinanian Palace (outside). Hit up Christinania at night. Another day, if you don't mind the touriesty touch, a short cruise around the Copenhagen canels, Rosenborg Castle and spend an nice evening at Nyhavn. I really enjoyed the Danish Resistance (anti-nazi) Museum as well, but I don't know how many other people would find it interesting. If you are there a friday or saturday night, bars are hot from about 12:00-6:00am. Mostly, I just loved the ambiance of Denmark.

Overrated IMO were the palaces outside of Rosenberg, I didn't think Tivoli was worth the entrance fee, and I didn't find Roskilde's Viking Museum worth the trip.

Outside of Copenhagen, Ærøskobing is easily the best bet; its on the island of Ærø. You can take a bus from København H (main train station) to the island of Fyn to the city of Svendborg to ferry over to Ærøskobing. Your best overnight option on Fyn is probably at Odense, as Svendborg looked a little too residential to me (I could be wrong though). I was fortunate enough to have family in Odense and Svendborg (and Copenhagen too), so I'm not so sure about the accomidations.

I don't know if you plan on going elsewhere, but nearby, Finland's Helsinki is worth a day or two but Estonia's Tallin is better; Poland is probably the best other option, with Gdansk and Krakow. I didn't think Oslo was worth the trip. If you can get a visa, Belarus would be really interesting. St Petersberg was stunningly beautiful, but almost overbearing and over done.

If you are interested in going around Germany more, let me know. My best friend (who is also an ex girlfriend) spent 4 months working in Friedberg, Germany last year and travelled around Germany alot.

If your tickets arn't booked, I would recommend a few more days in Copenhagen (and add Ærøskobing) and shed off a day or 2 in Stockholm. Alot of people consider Stockholm to be the capital of Scandinavia, but I would argue its Copenhagen and Copenhagen is much more interesting. I think the Gamla Stan (in Stockholm) is good for a day, and Wasa (about a 20 minute walk from Gamla Stan) is worth an hour or so but not much more.
I did Stockholm in day, while I spent 8 days in Copenhagen (1 day was recovering from drinking till 6am the night/morning before), and 2 days for for Ærøskobing, Svendborg and Odense. (Odense was more of an place to crash on Fyn more then anything)

As I said above, I thought the best part of Stockholm was the cruise in, and you can probably catch some of the views flying in, so take notice. Flying out of Copenhagen, you can also get some amazing views, so get a window seat as well.
