Calgary has the highest rate of hate-motivated crime in the country, according to a new study released by Statistics Canada.

In 2006, 92 hate crimes were reported in Calgary — about nine incidents for every 100,000 people in the city, or three times higher than the national average of three per 100,000, said the agency Monday.

It also says this:

The study pointed out that some cities' numbers could be higher because they have dedicated hate-crimes units or investigators. There is a hate/bias crimes liaison officer in Calgary.

Which could lead to skewed results.

Crime statistics are often flawed because they only reflect reported crimes. Still, it's something to be concerned about, but as it is the work of a tiny minority, I'm not sure how one would go about doing something about it.

I know you're being facetious, but a friend of mine once had a coworker (who was a member of an ethnic minority group) state in all seriousness that "I can't be racist because I'm not white!"

It would be interesting to know what the demographics involved are. Who is committing Calgary's hate crimes? Is it whites vs ethnic minorities, or is it between different ethnic groups? Or is it men vs women? Homophobes vs gays? All of the above? It's kind of tough to evaluate a general claim like that without knowing the demographics.

It could easily be someones way of creating job security. It would be easy to skew all types of crimes so that they meet hate crime criteria, and if your job depends on there being a lot of hate crimes, I could see how they might relax the criteria.

I think it could be related to the labour crunch. We have a lot more immigrant workers here than a lot of people are used to.

I remember being in Tim Horton's a few days ago when an East Indian lady was serving a guy in front of me and she didnt know a damn word of English. The guy was pointing at what he wanted from the menu.

I can imagine if you replace that guy with someone who is either in a hurry or had a bad day or just running low on patience that situation doesnt end as pleasantly.

I've noticed it in a lot of my dealings lately. Not a lot of patience in this city lately.

Just because people don't parade around with a swastika tatooed on the back of their head doesn't mean they aren't racist. I have encountered racism from an ethnic minority towards myself on more than one occasion.

I am pretty sure the 40 people in Calgary's KKK are not comprising the majority of these complaints.

I go to a lot of remote areas with my job and I have had numerous encounters with First Nations people who threaten me just because of my skin colour. I have had my property vandalized with racist comments as well. It happens so often that we don't even spend the night in certain communities any more.

Some of my best friends are First Nations people, but I have also experienced a lot of racism from that end as well.

Yep, same here.

In school the majority of the kids creating problems because of racism were Native kids.

Seems you are in some kind of denial that racism towards minorities still exists, because I highly doubt the majority of these hate crimes are ethnic vs white. If you are trying to say minority vs white racism is equally weighted to white vs minority racism, you are wrong. I'm sure it still happens way more to minorities.

So if i reported a hate crime today, even though none was committed would it count for this years a stats? Not suggesting at all that is happening for all you PC chaps out there, just sayin.

Which leads me to this...I want to know how many hate crimes indictments there were too, not just what was reported.

What constitutes being a hate crime? If i shout an ethnic slur at someone? What if he tells me to F off? Is that a hate crime too? It is still derogatory and if i try and report it, i am prob told to suck it up and take it like a man.

stereotyping is racism!
I am sure if i moved to some other country where i would be considered a minority, i would experience the samething others might here.
So in this city, since "whites" out number minorities, it makes perfect sense that we would be the majority!

In the interest of maintaining an intelligent discussion on the subject, your assumption may in fact be correct, but it might not be. And making such assumptions might be one of the problems with race discussions: Stereotypes are hard to overcome.

Huh? All I was pointing out was that racism is not only made up of white people being bigots. Did I ever say that whites were never racist? How do I seem like I am in denial? I am just wondering where you got that impression. I was pointing out that it does go both ways.

You tell me that I am wrong as well but then back up your statement with a personal opinion? Come on, give me some statistics that say it is mostly white people at the center of this rather than making blanket statements like I am wrong, or you doubt or you are sure.
