I apologoize for my original post where I said the Czechs wouldn't win a game. I was wrong, but the Czechs didn't look good in the game whatsoever. Swiss deserved a much better fate, they got screwed on the non calls, the first one was ridiculously blatant. I still believe the Czechs won't get thru, I just don't see anything there. No chance they beat Portugal on Wednesday.
FORCA PORTUGAL!!!!

Swiss have home field advantage which makes them a better team then you think.
I agree Czechs need to be better and I think they will. They really do miss Rosicky in the middle though.

portgual had a great start to the tournament today..
both goals were wonderful set ups.. and the score could have been much higher if it weren't for the posts and crossbar..
i thought the turks had the wrong game plan.. they were always doubling up (or even triple) on the wings to contain either CR or Simao.... but that leaves plenty of space in the middle (see the first goal by pepe).. they contained both wingers most of the time but left the midfield unmarked and leading to plenty of possession for portgual
aside from that.. good flow to the game.. the turks are a good team..
as for the first match to kick off euro 2008.. what a boring match..
but the only goal of the game was beautifully taken.. but the swiss played a fair game.. and used the homefield advantage.. however i think the lost of frei probably erase any chance of them qualifying to the next round (although it was never much to begin with)

Austria is actually looking pretty good. They've had some good chances, but the finishing quality really isnt there.
Aside from one defender at the back who is playing like a raving lunatic with zero discipline, and who will likely be sent off before this game is done, as he should have already been sent off.
Aside from him, Austria is doing pretty well, they just have to calm down a bit.

Was a pretty weak penalty to start. Austria are playing ok and have created some chances but they're awfully slow. Croat's are winning the races to the ball, especially that #18 Olic who runs for everything.

Yeah, he should have already gotten the 2nd yellow.

It was a penalty though and the player should have known it. The ref is pretty much forced to call a spot. Full marks to Austria though, they didn't fold up and tried to fight back but I'm afraid they just don't have it in them to advance.
Same for the Swiss now that the official word on Frei is out. They needed him to have any chance at getting through.

It was harsh. Even the commentator said it was controversial which in "commentator language" means it shouldn't have been. But I will agree with you that if the Austrian defender didn't want the risk of a penalty he shouldn't have made contact with that attacker.
Also it's weird to see a game played with an old-school soccer ball

I'm surprised at how good Austra looked and how bad Croatia looked for most of that game. Bring on the next one!

Playing defence, my whole life that was a penalty, and a stupid one by the defender the player was at such an angle there was no reason to charge into him late.
I watch it over many times on my pvr, and it was a penalty.
That being said. Austria was stellar in the second half. They've got alot of young players that are pretty good, this team could become a challenge for the bigger european nations for years to come.

Austria like the Swiss deserved a point from this one, but their finishing was pretty dreadful.
Ollic played a strong game, but good god, he's an embelisher. Anyone who watched the Portugal game and the Croatia game cannot tell me that this Ollic chap is not a bigger diver than anyone on the Portugal squad. The one in the first half was ridiculous. He was fouled, but fell to the ground, then thru his hips up in there and then proceeded to roll two times. That was pathetic. He should have been carded for that. Then he had another ridiculous embelishment in the second half.

Depends on the commentator I guess. At half time Forrest and I think Howard were of the opinion it was a foul and a poor play by the defender.
Anyway, spilled milk as they say, it's history.

Podolski scores for the Germans in a game against Poland.....is it me, or would Polish people have a legtimate right to be peeved about a German with that name scoring against them! That's like Niklas Backstrom shutting out Sweeden.
