I watched that event and not the hockey game.
Mainly because I was out for dinner during the game.

Plus, CBS tape delayed the fight in some markets to make way for a children's hospital telethon... My coverage was delayed until 11pm local.

From the article:
"The Saturday night tape-delayed Elite Extreme Combat event from Newark, N.J., came in with a local overnight rating of 4.7 and a 9 share. The rating peaked at 7.2 the final 15 minutes.
By comparison, a Stanley Cup final hockey game shown earlier in the evening on KNBC-TV Channel 4 averaged just a 1.3 local rating and a 3 share.
The MMA national overnight rating, which is an average for the nation's 54 largest markets, was a 2.7 with a 5 share."

Anyone else watch the event? Thompsons ear was probably the most disgusting thing I have ever seen in my entire life.

We watched the fight, and it was pretty good... It might give UFC a run for its money.
Yes, his ear was disgusting!!! I've never seen something pop like that - it was gross

Indeed, he should have had that sucker drained!
Many are complaining the fight was fixed. Personally, I don't think the quality of product is even close to UFC.

I dunno, I will post a few links after lunch of the look on Thompsons face after he gets punched that convinced me of the stoppage. Whether it should have been stopped at the end of the second is another discussion.

Personally, I would have liked to have seen Slice drop him. I'm not a fan of stopping fights when a fighter is still on their feet. (unless they drop their arms and are not defending themselves) Thompson took some shots for sure.

So this fight beat out the NHL in LA??
Big whoop?
(And I'm sure it beat the NHL nation-wide, but that's expected, isn't it?)

I always find it funny to hear people rave about how technical MMA is. There's more than a few UFCers who were just 'likes to fight' guys and decided to make a career out of it.

I think what EliteXC had going for them is Kimbo. This was really the first time I got to see him fight live. I'd never pay for a XC PPV yet, so I tuned in to watch him. I've seen the YouTube videos, and have seen his fights days after on a friends PVR.
MMA is a monster right now, but the word of mouth on this thing, regardless if you watch UFC or not, helped. The NHL is doing a horrible job of marketing themselves in the states, where as the UFC is the extreme opposite, and EliteXC arguably rode their coat tails into this weekend's broadcast.
'Crush' was impressive too in her fight. Didn't recognize her right away until those pre-taped interview introductions, then after the fight. Damn she's hot, slightly humble, and could kick Kimbo's butt if she didn't get tagged by his huge hands.
I'm not impressed anymore by Kimbo. He shouldn't be main event, but is the most marketable person, outside of 'Crush', EliteXC has right now. The girl fight and the Robbie Lawler fight were amazing IMO, damn thumb to the eyes.

There are far, far fewer "brawlers" in the UFC today. They simply aren't successful anymore. I cannot speak for the other MMA promotions, there are so many, and quite a few are sub par products.

Seems like to me that most of the UFC heavyweights are the brawlers... or more than any other weight class. Light Heavyweight to a degree have their's too, but anything below that, you're looking at technical fighters. I like a good knockout, but I like the anticipation of a tap too.
