The one good thing that has come out of this is a new awareness of living wills. Fill them out people and avoid situations like this one.

Its actually a story that's played out in hundreds if not thousands of instances in North America every week . . . . the decision to accept death either made by yourself or made by others for you.
This case simply became well known because others outside the family saw it as an opportunity to push an agenda into the public eye using her as a prop.
But the decision to withdraw life support from someone is very, very common.
In the 14 days it took Terry Schiavo to die, similar decisions were probably made in quieter circumstances by hundreds or thousands of families.

Agreed Cow.
Ive been through it myself, along with many others on this very forum I'm sure.
It is not a decision anyone wants to have to make, but it is necessary at times.
If nothing else, and as others have alluded too.....avoid this sort of thing happening to you and your family. Get a living will drawn up...today!

Living wills essentially mean little if they are not done properly. Unfortunately, most living wills are not comprehensive enough to avoid misinterpretation by doctors or the courts.
It is way more important to talk to your loved ones about this potentially uncomfortable subject as they will be the ones consulted pertaining to course of treatment if you are ever in such a situation.

I guess this begs the question "Is a feeding tube considered Life Support if it is the only way that a person can ingest sustinence or is it simply the vehicle that a person uses to intake food & water?"
I know a few people who rely upon feeding tubes who cannot eat or drink by conventional means who certainly do not think that the removal or a feeding tube is "pulling the plug."
The general consensus among them is that their feeding tubes do not sustain them but rather keep the route for food & water open so they can live in the manner that a detour steers you around road construction but still gets you to your destination.

If you believe, as her husband insisted, she never wanted to live in that state then it's a good day and a long delayed relief for Terri.

Agreed again.
I think that is what got lost in the whole media debacle this thing became...HER wishes.
Since the parents have no idea what she may or may not of said to her husband about if this may happen, we sort of have to defer to what he says she requested.
I have no doubt that this was talked about by the two of them...especially when you consider it was her own actions that spurned the brain damaging heart attack.
I certainly understand the heart break of the parents and the inability to see her slip away, but that truly is secondary to her own wants.

Exactly.
Which leads to an interesting question: Why was this case chosen by others to push self-serving agendas?
I don't have the answer to that.

I roll my eyes at this entire fiasco... How many people die every day? I see more crap on this Terri Shiavo ordeal on the news that the Quake that hit Asia last week where HUNDREDS of people died.
It's tragic no doubt, and I feel for Terri Shiavo for being a political/reglious (Yes, they go hand in hand) pawn. She's in a better place now and I can't wait until I don't see Terri Shiavo on the news every 10 minutes...

As an ex-Florida resident all I can say is, it's about time. The media spot light has been on her for as years (as long as I can remember living in Florida Terri Shiavo has been front and center news). The poor woman has been through hell. For her that has hopefully bought her a spot in heaven. For those politicians that stuck their nose in and changed legislation to get some face time and forward their own agendas, I hope they burn in hell.

They are saying now that both sides of the family want an autopsy to see how much brain damage she actually had. Sad story all around.
