I'm no linguistic expert, but I think what you're describing is in fact NOT a suprise appearance.

Single artist tour. It's Kanye, his orchestra, probably A-Trak and his hits.
Up In Smoke was dope, but that was everyone sharing the same stage - together. There was no opener for that tour. It was Dre, Cube, Snoop, Em and everyone from Death Row.
Even then... Glow In The Dark is changing hip-hop concerts all together. Not even Up In Smoke or Rock The Bellz will match the type of entertainment we'll be seeing tonight.
Still, they are great in their own right and I am not discrediting their impact.
Edit - A-Trak is not on the tour, DJ Craze is now backing him.

Went to the show in Winnipeg on Monday. Met Chris Brown and Matt Santos(who was probably the best performer of the night). Overall I wasn't impressed with Kanye at all. His performance was kind of boring. Both N.E.R.D and Lupe defenitly outshone him and in my opinion Kanye should have opened for them. Rhianna was also boring and was rocking a wicked dyke haircut . If your going to the concert defenitly watch the opening acts.

Was at the show in Edmonton last night and it was dope. Like someone said get there early because Lupe is the first performer (why?). He should have gone right before Kanye IMO instead of first because a lot of people came late and missed his act.
Although come to think of it not many people at the concert last night even knew many of his songs besides "Superstar" and one or two more. "Streets on Fire" is a crazy track live.
N.E.R.D was pretty solid and got the crowd into it and Rihanna is Rihanna and put on a decent show.
No matter what people say about Kanye West, he knows how to put on a show. The lighting and the stage will pretty much put any rap performer to shame. Overall it was a pretty sweet show though and if you're a fan of hip-hop the show won't disappoint IMO.

It's funny. With the lingo in the 1st few posts, I had no idea what was going on.
I was pictureing some dork named "Ye" putting on a planitarium-like laser light show. I was wondering why people seemed so hyped for it.

My girlfriend is going to this. I guess she's going more for N.E.R.D. than anyone else. I'm just happy my sister was able to go so I didn't get dragged to it.

Pretty much the same. I lent my sister the money for the ticket and told her to pay me back when it was convenient.

Just not really my music. Plus, I already had tickets to Bonnaroo (Kanye, Lupe, Talib Kweli are all playing there) so it didn't make sense to spend the extra money.

One of, if not the best concert I have ever seen
This show was perhaps the best concert I have ever seen. My basis of comparison is not absolutely huge but it is pretty big, I worked at the Saddledome as an usher for 7 years and have seen my fair share of shows including u2, celine dion, elton john, 50 cent, janet jackson, brooks and dunn, black eyed peas, nine inch nails, motley crue etc...I have been to mos def, seen talib kweli, blackalicious, J5 and other hip hop shows.
Anyways, the show was amazing. Lupe was great although I was disappointed that he was the first act. He played for about half an hour. He seemed to want to play most of his stuff so he cut a bunch of songs short like Kick, Push and I Gotcha which was somewhat disappointing but nevertheless, Lupe was great.
N.E.R.D. was new to me, being unfamiliar with their material made it hard to really enjoy as I love to sing along and stuff, but I enjoyed their style. Pharrell is a master at hyping the crowd, and I loved his slipup when he said something like "tell them Canadia....(inserts self deprecating humour then continues)...Canada is the best yada yada yada, too funny.
Rihanna was good, I am not a fan but people seemed to enjoy her. The crowd seemed to die down during her act from the high that NERD got everyone up to until Chris Brown showed up for the last song Umbrella.
After a somewhat long wait Kanye came out and nailed every single song with a show that was more like a space opera than a concert. He was able to tell a story through song and slight interludes that just had a really awesome flow to it. My personal highlights were his performances of Through the Wire and Jesus Walks, but the remainder of the show was fantastic as well including the one slower song Hey Mama which was a good emotional slow down. He ended things with Touch the Sky where Lupe re-appeared on stage which was a nice touch too.
Overall a great show, perhaps the best Ive seen. W00t

I had a ton of fun. Kanye was unreal! In an hour and a half he only took one ~3minute break while his backup singers did a song. The guy was an absolute machine, and the production was very cool.

Yea, it was rocking. The tour itself was getting some great reviews, I believe the concert sold out right away.
Not a lot of replies in this thread, I might have been the only person who didn't drink their face off and got up early.

Best concert I've ever seen.
I think I was the only one enjoying the Lupe act as everyone in my section kept asking "What's this guy saying?"
NERD was good too, except no one really knows their stuff. That Canadia comment was hilarious!
Rhianna was alright, nothing really special about her performance, except when Chris Brown came out.
Kanye was unreal, I've gotta say he exceeded my expectations. The stage was unreal, the sets he threw down worked well with his interludes. And to end it with Lupe, just a great all around show!!
