Default Property Taxes- how did you do?

A post in the C-train thread reminded me, how did you guys do with your final tax assesments?

Mine went from $126 per month up to about $160 per month. That's a 27% increase. I think the preliminary amount they showed for my tax was going to be around 10%.

What about the rest of you?

$150 to $160.

That's with a decrease in property taxes, but an increase in property value.

is that for your total property taxes? So you pay about $1900 per year?

Parking spot is 56$

My TIPP went from about $150ish to about $190ish. Not really pleased with that...but I guess Stelmach doesn't quite have enough money in the coffers!

What's Stelmach got to do with it? Blame Davie... I realive good 'ole Bronco likes to blame every tax increase on someone else and continually whines about not getting enough (like any good Liberal), but it's pretty hard for him to blame city property taxes on the provincial government.

Looks like you bought it though.

Yep, that sounds about accurate. 1300 sq foot house in McKenzie Towne.

Is that high or low?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but according to what I've read about 50% of our property taxes go to the province. The province then decides what to transfer back to the cities.

compared to me low...I live in Lethbridge and just got my property taxes.....$3500

I think he is referring the school tax portion that the Alberta government collects. Mayor Whinning Bronco wants to keep 100% of the property taxes collected fund the city (not that I blame him). The tax increase this year I guess would have been less if the City kept 100% of the property tax revenue.

My taxes went from $1850 last year to $2045 this year. About a 10% increase, based on a $400,000 assesment.

While I am as right or centre as you get, Calgary gets royally bent over and fed the ole San Francisco treat when it comes to economic equality.

Calgary contributes over half of all education taxes the gov of Ab takes and gets less than 40% of the total take back.

Calgary should not have to fund farm towns that should follow the natural order of things and die, instead the gov uses it to prompt them up because of the severly distorted urban vs rural vote % in this province.

I will never Vote Liberal based purley on morale standings. Its the NDP that rightfully should govern this province but they have veered far far far too left for any sane majority to vote for them.

It is true that property tax includes the education tax, which does go to the province. That is then doled back out to the city in some smaller percentage. I disagree that Davie should get to keep it all and "let the farm towns die". Those sub-communities to Calgary, like Strathmore, Airdrie, Okotoks, Cochrane, etc. all feed workers and consumers into the city. Calgary is part of the greater community that is Alberta, and the even greater community that is Canada.

I don't begrudge the equalization sharing that the feds impose on Alberta, even though it is quite possible that we could be the only one paying into it in a few years. I do, however, get tired of those in Sask, or Manitoba, or Quebec (for example) complaining about Alberta, or making off color jokes about our industry/culture/etc. while we are effectively paying for their health care and quality of life.

Just take the money and STFU and be on your way.

More like $150 to $195, not including taxes for the two parking spots.

Do most of you do the TIPP program, or just pay lump sum? I just did lump sum last year because I assumed there was an interest rate associated with TIPP that I'd rather avoid if possible. Is this true?

Taxes on my property here in Edmonton:

Last year - Approx. $133 per month - $1600 per year.

This year - Approx. $183 per month - $2200 per year.

$600 increase in a one year period is just plain crazy if you ask me.

The city assessment went from $203,500 last year to $401,000 this year...

From about $150 to $165 per month. As I understand it, there's no difference between paying monthly (TIPP) or lump-sum. I believe the balance changes in the final month.

What are people referring to with parking spot payment? Is that street parking?

If you own a lot in a condo or something, you have to pay property taxes on it. Mine's going to be about $80 total this year for two stalls... not really much, but still quite the annoyance to have have to deal with it.

Neither, my property taxes are included in my mortgage payments. I fax my mortgage company my tax bill and they pay it.

I think that if you go on the TIPP program there is no interest. IIRC you are actually paying 6 months ahead of the "due date", so the interest sort of balances itself out as 1/2 the year the city "owes" you money, and for the other half you owe them.
