Default U of C Course Selection Advice

Hey all...so I'm coming to the U of C next year, and I'm struggling to get my timetable all filled up. I'm going into the Faculty of Communication and Culture and I need one more course to give me a full year. So do you guys have any recommendations as to what courses were fun? Interesting? Easy?

I've got the fall semester all filled with Communication Studies, Development Studies, and History 201, as well as Philosophy 279 and Poli Sci 213.

In the winter so far, I've got General Studies 201, Law and Society 201 and 203, and Psychology 203...

Any ideas oh grand CP oracle? Any comments are greatly appreciated.

A lot of 300+ courses (IIRC) are only open to those in second year (or above) standing. So, it sounds like you need more junior courses. There might be some 300-level that you can take, though.

Oh that sounds good! But is it open to first year students?

Edit---much to my dismay, it isn't open to first years...dammit!

Is Holden still around? Even if he isn't, try Econ 201 and/or 203. First year Soci is useful too because there are a few really interesting upper year Soci classes you may want open to you down the line.

There's always Scopes for Dopes and Bits for Twits.

Agree with fredr123 and recommend you take Econ 201 IF Holden is still teaching. When I was graduating I had heard he was no longer doing it, but I was never ambitious enough to check.

I enjoyed the introductory Japanese, but it is a pretty hefty amount of work.

There is also Rocks for Jocks! (Geology for non-geology majors)

Holden doesnt do Econ anymore, he got poached by Geography.

Scopes for Dopes is good, but again, you have to be careful who you get as a prof, some of them take intro courses way too seriously.

I took the led zeppelin one in last semester for first year engineering. and there was the jimi hendrix one for muhl 309 in fall semester. but maybe communication and culture can't take those classes in 1st year

What is this Scopes for Dopes and Bits for Twits? Scopes would be...chem? bio? No thanks haha, had enough of that in high school. Bits would be...computers? Again, not a real techno-weenie. If this Holden guy is so good, should I look into getting into a class with him, no matter what the subject?

Holden is awesome, but I think hes doing 3rd and 4th year Geog major courses these days.

In the second last year of my studies he had finally gotten his Geography PHD, so this would make sense. I always liked the rumor that he just got hit on by too many students though.

As to the quality of his other courses, I can't be too sure. All I remember was him doing his Jerry Springer lecture and flicking the lights on and off.

See if Max Foran is teaching a Canadian Studies course. He is, hands down, the best prof I had in undergrad.

An aussie school Principle with a PHd, who came to Canada and married Grant McEwan's daughter. The guy is brilliant and a fiercly proud Albertan. Oh, he also knows how to teach - something rare in uni.

Having said that, he may now be retired as he was getting older when I left.

Another good prof is a guy named Peter Tracy in the Econ department. Another guy who takes pride in his teaching product. I wish there were more like these two out there.

Word of warning for rocks for jocks... I think its GOPH 375... there's a couple professors who occasionally teach it that take it VERY seriously. I got a B+ in it, but that is only because I really pulled it together in the final. Many people were shocked since it was supposed to be "such an easy course"

glgy 209 is rocks for jocks, and goph 375 is called natural disasters. neither are hard, and us geo majors are not allowed to take either. They also discourage science kids to take them. Basically if you know what a rock is, and if you know what a graph of y = x^2 looks like then you are good to go.

yes we are allowed... but we are strongly told against it. Basically, its not what geophysics is about at all. I guess an analogy would be like taking a chemistry class and learning that baking soda and vinegar react.
