Indeed. And that difference is luck. Nothing else.

Simple. You are lucky you haven't killed anyone by driving drunk yet.

Do you speed?
Do you drive when you are tired?

I've read somewhere that talking on the phone (nevermind texting) reduces your driving capabilities to that of someone who is impaired. Dunnoif it's true or not, but it's a pretty scary thought.
If it's actually true, the way some people smoke, drive, talk on the phone and eat, they would be absolutely SMASHED behind the wheel in comparison to someone who's a few bevvies over. Not justifying, just thought it was an interesting comparison.

Plus, there are days when that smoking, cell phone yakking, burger munching driver has a head cold/allergies and has taken a double dose of anti-histamines just to put a nice glow on his overall state of euphoria. Truly, drinkers aren't the only people who are a menace to society and need to be handed a blind fold and a cigarette. Wait, cigarettes are politically incorrect ... better just give him a stick of sugarless gum with that blind fold.

Okay, this just isn't true. There are different levels of intoxication. It's not just bad luck that the pisstank who can't see straight is more likely to get in a wreck than a guy who is barely over the line. The drunker you are the worse you are going to drive. There isn't any luck involved.
It's not an excuse for anybody or anything. It's just common sense.
I heard an interview with a longtime drunk-driving crusader on the radio once and he was quite skeptical about this whole "zero tolerance" approach. I wish I could remember his name. Anyway, he said "our goal was to get drunks off the road, not people who'd had a drink with dinner off the road, but drunks because they were killing people, but now people are advocating a 0.0 limit and that wasn't the goal and not what I wanted to do and not who the focus should be on".
That isn't really directed at anybody (and doesn't even apply to this story), but it made sense to me so I figured I'd add it in.

Yes, and not if I can avoid it.
The difference though is that I am not sitting here trying to rationalize and excuse the things I do.
And "I wouldn't drive drunk if the transit system was better" is an incredibly lame excuse.

You've got that right. Why not just NOT drink when going out? It isn't hard to do. I realize sacrificing a little fun for the lives of innocent people is a lot to ask, but...

I wasn't referring to that idiot's "bad" luck.
I was referring to Boblobla's good luck in not hurting anyone yet by driving drunk.
And I agree with your later comments about how the idea is to get legally drunk people off the road, not all people who have had any kind of drink. However, if you are too drunk to operate a vehicle properly, you are creating a dangerous situation on the road, whether you are at .085 or .85.
And while boblobla tried to deflect his dangerous actions by comparing them to speeding, the simple fact is, you can adjust your speed while driving to adapt if you are creating a dangerous situation. You can't change your drunkenness while driving. Stop making excuses and get off the road.

You know what I consider luck? That no one I care about (excluding myself) has been involved in any alcohol-related vehicle accidents. I honestly hope the odds aren't stacking up against me.

Yeah, I'm not the one justifying Drunk Driving or even Drinking and Driving... I may be self-righteous and holier-than-thou, but since I don't put people at risk by driving after drinking, I'd say I've got a right to be as compared to you and the OP on this issue. If you don't like it, tough...

I'd be curious to see a poll with the question "Have you ever driven after drinking?"...

...? That is a pretty dumb question because everyone probably has.
Now, over the 0.08 limit? I did that once 7 years ago (I was probably over the limit) - was never caught or got even close to getting in an accident, but it was still one of the dumbest things I've ever done.
Having a drink or 2 with dinner, then driving after having a little bit of time to digest? Who hasn't? Most people aren't near the limit after that.

dont have the time to read this now, but on page 6 is a chart of leading factors in car crashes{UK}. seems like booze is low on the list. agian i havent read this yet, but i figured I would add it anyways. driver error is the biggest problem.
