Default Calgary on a Friday Night

So, here I am back in Calgary for the first time in four months. I have never really been into the live music scene but I am really interested in going to a live show tonight. Does anybody have any suggestions as far as live music in the city? I am generally into rock or heavy rock. I have a strong urge to go to a punk show but I am having difficulty finding anything on the internet listing shows. Any help would be appreciated. Or suggestions, I don't know what to do to entertain myself here any more. I have grown out of the club scene so a decent pub would be nice.

The Blind Beggar on Macleod Trail and 50th Ave SW is an excellent local live music venue.

Live music Wed-Sun. Tonight is Indie Invasion...so two bands, three sets. Great sound, good times.

Looks like the big night out will be on Sunday. Anywhere for epic good times and live music in the SW? How is the Warehouse?

If you like watching Barstar Jocks, Goths, and Ravers all compete for the same venue at the same time, then go to the Warehouse.

I repent, as I WOULD in fact deal with Jocks, Goths, and Ravers to see Infected Mushroom!

Online it says that the Infected Mushroom show was pushed back to the 22nd. I listened to a little bit of their music online and it seemed like the kind of stuff that would result in the majority of people at the show being high on E. Sounds like the Warehouse is a negative then. Have any of you been to Broken City before? I am thinking of checking them out tonight. Apparently they usually have pretty good live music.

Broken City is great.

Infected Mushroom is music for people on E if they we're back at a Rave in 1994. Usually these people are parents by now, and long over the E-dropping phase. Doesn't mean they might not want to still come out for the MUSIC!

Also, it occurs to me that the first rave generation has to be getting into their 40's by now, and I was wondering why there hasn't been a proliferation of 'over 25' parties like there is in other parts of the country?

Honestly I don't know much about the scene. I haven't really seen much for live music in my short life and have definitely never been to a show for music like the stuff Infected Mushroom makes. What would one expect at their show?

Regardless I am pretty open to giving new things a try, but unfortunately the vast majority of my friends are not. Its hard to get them to do things other then generic top 40 crap.

I heard there are a few bands that play at the Stetson Inn (a little motel on Macleod and ?Southland? I don't know what kind of music they play... the girl that used to manage the tanning salon I go to used to frequent the place quite a bit...

Hmm, well it looks like Sunday is going to be an epic day of Lucky Extra Lager and Philadelphia VS Pittsburgh followed by LEL and street hockey followed by LEL and Rock band followed by whatever bar gets the best aggregate Calgary Puck rating. Thus far I am thinking Broken City. Now, If anybody would like to get a street hockey game together at the Signal Hill hockey rink I would love to get a good game going after game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals. It is unlikely but I do think it would be fun if something happened. Have a great weekend and send me a PM or reply in the thread if you have serious interests about playing street hockey on Sunday!

There is a James Muretich benefit concert on Sunday night at Flames Central. A bunch of locals are playing that.
