LONDON (AFP) — A booze-fuelled Briton pretending to be Star Wars villain Darth Vader was punished Tuesday for a bizarre surprise attack on two Jedi fanatics.
Arwel Wynne Hughes, 27 -- who has a chronic alcohol problem -- donned a black bin bag for a cape and used a metal crutch for a lightsabre when he impersonated the Dark Lord of the Sith on March 25.
He then lept over the wall of a "Jedi Church" where Barney Jones and his cousin Michael were duelling with lightsabres while filming a documentary.
The fans of the Star Wars films established the "church" last year in Holyhead, northwest Wales.
Hughes hollered "Darth Vader" as he swung his crutch about, whacking Barney Jones over the head with it and punching Michael Jones in the thigh.
The Jedi are guardians of peace and justice, and the force was with them at Holyhead Magistrates' Court as district judge Andrew Shaw punished "Darth Vader" with a two-month suspended jail sentence and a 100-pound (195-dollar, 126-euro) fine.
Hughes got off lightly compared to the film version of Vader -- who had a hand chopped off by his son Luke Skywalker and was finished off by bolts of Force lightning from the evil Emperor Palpatine.
Hughes, who has previous convictions for assault, had drunk the best part of a 10-litre box of wine and could not remember the attack, his lawyer Frances Jones told the court.

Wow, 10 litres of wine? I'm surprised he could even stand let alone jump over a wall.

He fell to the drunk side of the force

Darth Vader - Ish da Drunk side more powerful mssstr?

Yoda - No, easier, more seductive, it makes you feel lightsabre proof. When you are giggly and happy and everyone is your bestest friend in the whole wide world you have been seduced by the drunk side.

Be wary Vader once you go down the drunk side, forever will it dominate your destiny. Dizziness, vomiting and the compulsion to staple a T-Shirt to your chest are all signs that you are wandering down that path.

Darth Vader - Awesome!!!

I'm probably going to sound like a really big dork here... but

Didn't Luke get his hand chopped off by Vader, not the other way around?

on-topic, very strange incident.

And as far as fines go, 100 Pounds seems pretty loow for assault, no?

Ya, and then Luke returned the favour in Return of the Jedi.

Luke got his hand cut off in "Empire Strikes Back". He in turn lobbed Vader's hand off near the end of "Return of the Jedi". The symbolism is endless...

Edit: Bah, stupid slow typing...

Pshaw, what idiot reporter/editor/fact-checker allowed this rubbish to be written? Everyone knows that Luke didn't chop off Vader's hand, but rather his artificial robotic replacement hand! His actual hand was chopped off decades earlier by Count Dooku.

:P

Both.

In The Empire Strikes Back, Vader chops off Luke's hand; in Return of the Jedi, Luke chops off Vader's artificial hand. He then looks at his own robotic appendage and realizes that he's following the same path as his father, which is exactly what Palpatine wants.

dude shouldn't have gotten a fine and sentence, he should have gotten a freaking medal for trying to take out two star wars geeks! I mean, I own the movies in both vhs (letterbox collectors edition, even) and dvd, and I watch them all every couple years or so, so yea, I like the movies and all, but man, to go to a 'church' and play with pretend lightsabers just screams 'mid-life' abortion material right there......

of course that's all tongue in cheek, actually the whole incident is quite ridiculously funny. Would have been funnier still if he would have whipped out his mini-sabre and soaked them with his 'liquidized force essence' at the end.

His mitichlorian count wasn't high enough, although his blood alcohol level was through the roof. Both give people superpowers, but in the end, it didn't matter - an angry Sith is an angry Sith.

Ahhh, well it just seems to me like you all sensed a disturbance (wrongful jedi fact recording) in the force at around the same time. Coincidence?
