Engaging in commerce and touching money are two different things. So are you confirming that Mormons believe they will go to hell if they come into contact with money? That's what mackster's claim sounded like to me.
Unreal.
I grew up in the religion. You are asked to keep the sabbath holy, a day of rest. Some people take it to extremes. Those who don't aren't going to hell because of it, in the eyes of the religion. Same with caffeine ingestion.
macker can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think his comment that Mormons can't "touch money" on Sundays was supposed to be interpreted literally. Not engaging in commerce on a Sunday is a common practice of the religion though. Are you denying that?
Is this a straw man I see before me? I believe it is!
The original question was "How to repel Mormons", not "Let's make fun of Mormons", nor was it "I wish the Mormons wouldn't come bother me at home, but I sure would be interested in learning more about them on the CP OT messageboard!"
The only thing "typical" about this discussion is the attempt to derail it into a discussion of how people shouldn't want Mormons to leave them alone, or how the Mormons' beliefs really aren't so wacky after all, or how someone who doesn't like religious dronebots at his/her door probably also sets the hounds on any Girl Guides who come by and then laughs as they flee screaming and wailing.
Again, if it's ok for Mormons to come to my private residence and try to tell me all about Joe Smith, his opium dreams and expertly forged sheets of goldplated gobbledy, then it should also be ok for me to go to their private place of worship and try to tell them all about how God is dead and no one cares. For the record, I don't think the latter is ok for the same reason I don't think the former is ok - BOTH are arrogant, presumptuous and lacking altogether in respect for other people's right to privacy.
What exactly is your point? Two current Mormon's offered insight. I simply pointed out that people are more interested in belittling them and their beliefs than actually trying to clear up some misconceptions. So how exactly is that out of line?

Based on his post, I definitely took it to be meant literally. Touch money does not equal engage in commerce to me. People need to be specific.
I haven't denied anything.

Is that rude? Personally, I would appreciate a more, 'not interested' reply than someone calling my belief a cult and closing the door in my face.
You forgot our conversation earlier where i stated to them that i did't believe in their faith and their coming by in the future would be a waste of their time. They didn't leave but pressed for an answer why and i gave it to them. I try to be polite and patient with people who come to my door.
My answer wasn't rude. It was my honest assesment of their faith. Especially since i took the time to learn about their beliefs, who i might add was taught to me by another member of their church. I'm not going to lie when someone asks me a question.

Or agnostics. Or any 'other' group.
Damn right I would. It's bad enough with the Mormons and the JWs, can you imagine if every single religious and anti-religious group did the same thing? I'd have to buy two missionary-bitin' dogs and have them work in shifts.
Of course, in a world like that nobody'd ever be home - neighborhoods would just be filled with groups of people lining up at the empty houses and ringing the doorbells of all the other people who are also off trying to make converts.

With all due respect to any Australian coming across this thread, when that feller says "ME-JIC MOHR-MIN UNDA-PENTS" in that twangy accent, it cracks me up.
My experiences with mormonism may be somewhat skewed as I was staying on the BYU campus which is like Mecca in Utah. As I said it may have changed now but you couldn't go to a 7-11 and get a caffeinated pop. Everyone wore the long john's. As for handling the money on a Sunday : it may have been a one time deal but I worked with a guy about 10 years ago who refused to be scheduled on Sunday as he was mormon and refused to handle money on Sunday. Just my experiences with mormons and I don't claim to know anything about the core of their beliefs but someone was asking about caffeine and I don't think the hard core mormons are allowed caffeine but correct me if I am truly BSing. Maybe one should ask next time one knocks on my door for clarification

My point is that you aren't understanding that most people don't CARE to learn about Mormonism, and that the original point of this thread is that this attitude of not caring goes beyond mere indifference right to the point of actively wanting to avoid Mormons interested in teaching about it. Do you not see the irony of people then offering to explain it to others who have already made it abundantly clear they don't want it explained?

That's great! People who don't care to learn about something shouldn't be making fun of it.
The two posters in question weren't offering to explain the religion..they were offering to answer questions and clear up misconceptions that had crept in. Big difference. In fact, Rathji made i abundantly clear he wasn't interested in trying to push his faith on anyone.

Again, I was in Utah quite a bit in the 80's and there was no shortage of Mountain Dew. Not every mormon wears the underwear. That's patently false. I'm sure many Mormon's refuse to handle money or work on Sundays....which is something not unique to Mormonism by the way. That said, there are plenty of Mormons who go to stores and buy caffeinated beverages in normal underwear on Sundays.

The underwear is worn by Temple Mormons only. I'm not sure if all of them wear them or just the ones which achieve a certain degree within the Temple rituals.
Mormons don't believe they will go to hell if they drink coffee. In fact Mormons don't see many folks going to hell. The reason they baptize folks in the name of dead folks is to allow that dead person to achieve an angelic status in the afterlife. They also see a second chance in the afterlife for people to repent and be recieved by God.
A Mormon man can through discipline work his way through the various priesthoods and attain godhood in the next life.
Question: When did the LDS start sending missionaries door to door? In what year?
You forgot our conversation earlier where i stated to them that i did't believe in their faith and their coming by in the future would be a waste of their time. They didn't leave but pressed for an answer why and i gave it to them. I try to be polite and patient with people who come to my door.

Like someone else said....they probably don't keep tabs on which houses they have visited, and who told them not to come back.
Personally, unless someone is intentionally being rude, or trying to force their belief on me....I'll always be respectful.
Question: Do mormons believe that everyone who is NOT mormon goes to hell? Is this how all religions are?
No and No.
Evangelical protestants believe that though.

Considering some of the comments like 'agnosticism is the only rational belief'...there are some people here who only hate the door-to-door solicitors because of what they're preaching.

I'm not trying to be rude, this is just out of curiousity.
If someone who is not religious, and does not go to church, does not go to hell, then why do people choose to be religious? And why do they force it on others?
