I hate transit so much. After riding the tube in London and seeing how easy it is to get around the country on a train Calgary has a long way to go with their transit system.

Interesting story, but why the hell is the mayor wearing a climbing harness is that first bit while exploring the tunnel? It's not like he had any repelling to do to get down there.

My guess is the access ladder isn't exactly up to code, so he likely had a cable tied to him in case one of the wrungs gave way.

It just looked funny, I mean he's hardly even ten meters below the surface and the main access point comes from the street level on the north side.

...and really, florescent green??? What is this the mid eighties?

I'm just impressed that there is that much of a tunnel underground already. I would love to see the Ctrain head under ground. It would get rid of the issue of 4 car trains not fitting ans the Dalhousie train heads north from downtown. Plus it would speed everything up if only one route is using 7th ave. A number of times the slowness downtown has more to do with waiting for the train in front of you.

A couple post below this post, someone mentions that one stop could have a common platform. Yes. That is the first thing. Second thing to consider is that when the stops are underground, you can have multiple walking tunnels to surface entrances/exits.

So I see what you're saying here, but sometimes a longer walk could actually save time. In Rome, for instance, most metro stops that are around busy intersections have 3,4,5 or 6 entrances and exits that will take you under the intersection and put you on the corner you want to be on. It'd be like Heritage LRT station having a walking tunnel that goes underneath Horton Road and McLeod Trail and puts you right on the London Drugs corner. No waiting for lights at McLeod to cross the street.

Apply that thinking downtown and it's easy to picture a few scenarios where less stops combined with more access tunnels to the stops would actually translate into faster commutes for transit riders than would more stops.

Of course, there are alot of gypsies and bums in those hallways. Gotta have a thick skin, you do.

We already have too many 'trolls' under our 9th Ave bridges for my liking. Subway tunnels will only attract more inward from the drop-in centre area.

Yeah, I hear what you're saying... But not building tunnels to keep out bums is sorta like not building roads to avoid crappy drivers.

Interesting developments... having used the subway in Toronto, the bums/crime don't seem like too much of an issue. Not sure if it's because of good design or security, but I didn't really have too many problems.

Man, I hate it when they tease with the North Central LRT line. There is a sign on Harvest Hill Blvd. that says "Future Home of LRT Park & Ride". However, the time frame on that leg of the LRT is what, 15-20 years away?!?

I remember as an 8 year old seeing a sign in Crowfoot that said "Future Home of Crowfoot LRT station"

Now that I'm in my mid-20s the wait is almost over! Be patient, your only two short decades from being 20mins from Downtown!

My transit pet peeve as that there are three buses that go by my house, and all of them arrive within one minute of each other. And the first one always gets me to Anderson just in time to watch the train that starts there and has open seats pull away. It would only have to get to my stop about 1 minute earlier to get through the lights at Macleod one light cycle ahead of when it does, and then I'd have a seat.

My only problem with the plan for underground is keeping the 7th Ave part. Find a way to get that underground too, it can help some traffic crap.

Am I the only one who thinks that moving only one of the lines underground is stupid? If you're gonna do 1, go for the gusto and take em all under.

Everyone hear that? Dan02 just volunteered to give the city a billion dollars! Thanks, Dan02!

Be glad your bus actually shows up on time on a consistent basis

I have to bump this thread after today.

People!! When the train is packed like a can of sardines and you are standing by the door. DO NOT STAND STILL and expect people to walk around you like you are royalty. Is it so hard to walk out of the train, stand by the doors and then re-enter once everyone get's off?
I just thought that was common courtesy, clearly something half this city lacks!!

In a city that lives and dies by the price of a single commodity combined with the continuing degeneration of society's sense of accountability and consequences, its not really surprising to me that Calgary can sometimes feel like a giant High School. Complete with the maturity and consideration level, too.

But if they do that the doors will slam shut in 1.2 miliseconds and the train will speed away leaving them stranded!

Idiots.

I got off the CTrain downtown yesterday and when the doors opened was greeted by a wall of people all trying to get on immediately. I don't even care anymore, I just plow into them and move them out of my way.

I pull out my junk and wave it around aggressively while yellling "Get the hell out of my way, I'm packing heat and I'm not afraid to use it"

The whole platform splits like the red sea for me.
