Stolen Bike - Rocky Soul
Hey everyone,
Last night my girlfriend's bike was stolen from outside the Blind Beggar pub on Macleod Trail. It was locked to a handrail that was mounted into the ground for some concrete stairs right outside.
Whoever did this backed a truck up over the rail to rip it right out of the earth, pulled a 5" diameter steel rail through the u-lock, and drove off with it.
This is a $700 bike, and so needless to say we are appalled. It is black, with disc brakes, hydraulic click-shift tranny, and a super lightweight frame. It has "Rocky Mountain" in big letters down the slant-bar through the middle of the frame.
Serial no. is PRK0630954 in case a deal too good to be true comes your way in the next little bit.
My girl and I work very hard for peanuts, and so that bike was a huge accomplishment for her, and is her PRIMARY TRANSPORT TO WORK.
If YOU happen to be, or know the thief, then email me from an anonymous email to ciaran_audio@hotmail.com and maybe think about returning it? I will not seek any legal action as long as we get the bike back.
- Traddy

Sorry to hear. Be sure to check out local pawn shops, pinkbike.com, and ebay. Be sure to register the serial with police and that way it will shop up here: http://www.cpic-cipc.ca/English/search.cfm
I will keep an eye out in Red Deer as I usually look at bike ads all the time.

Maybe spend an afternoon dropping by all the pawn shops you can with the bike info. Leave them a picture, description and serial number.
Worth a shot.
I did that years ago when I had over 400 cds stolen, gave every 2nd hand music store a list of what was stolen. They called the cops when half of them came through the store, got them back from the police.
Thieves are scum.

God I hate bike thiefs.. I just bought myself a new Norco and have been so paranoid with it. You really can't leave bikes anywhere these days, you just can't.
Pretty sad.

I mean, hell, it was bolted with a freaking u-lock! The indestructible ones that have a guarantee that if the thieves break the lock, then the company will replace your bike!
So they just bashed a concrete mounted steel rail down with a truck and slipped the entire rail through the u-lock while it was still attached to the bike.

Not only pedal bikes, I had a $8,000 Yamaha dirt bike stolen from me last year. Had it locked up with two heavy duty Kryptonite locks, unlocked it for the day while I worked on it in the evening. Had the battery on the charger for a while, fell asleep and it was gone in the morning.
Unlocked for 1 day and it disappeared. Friggin' animals out there.

Man that seems like an awful lot of trouble to go through for a 700 dollar bike. These guys do not know what they are doing.
They did more than 700 dollars damage to their truck, and they aren't going to be selling that bike at retail prices. Of course the truck probably isn't theirs either.
Good luck. Hopefully they catch these creeps.

Yeah, my garage was broken into a few months ago and I lost about $6000.00 worth of bikes. Not to mention the $4000.00 worth of boards and golf clubs that were "liberated". They tried to steal my truck too, but the lock got punched into the door and they couldn't get into it.
The thing that really sucks is that I'm sure it was crackheads, and they probably sold my bike for $50.....when 1 crank arm is easily worth that. The cops didn't do JACK either. Probably too busy giving me speeding tickets.
This city is really starting to get on my nerves.

My girl is so upset she wants to move. Understandable given the immediate shock and anger that comes with getting your prized possession stolen, but I think there may be more to it than that.
This city has become very harsh, and heartless.

they typically use trucks that are virtually worthless . . . or that have heavy steel bumpers and protection.

I don't really think bike theft is a new thing, like the 2008 crime wave has hit Calgary. These aren't gangs, they're drug addicts, which have been around as long as...drugs.
BTW, I guess you could move, but relative to other big cities Calgary is still very safe, unless you're thinking of moving to Bunghole, Saskatchewan or something.

Or her extension cords.
Seriously though, I feel your pain. Thieves are scum. I had one break into my car and steal my cds and Ipod that was in my glove compartment. I guess the only consolation I had with that is, they popped off my window by prying it off rather than breaking it. So at least I didn't have to pay to have that fixed as well.

Huh. I'd never even heard of this "method" before. Smashing a metal pole out of a concrete pad must be a noisy procedure. What a strange and kind of risky way to go around stealing bikes.

It might be worth checking out the pinkbike.com buy&sell section and post in the stolen bikes section of the forum.

You'll only get one star and after that you just have to drive out of the flashing circle and wait a couple seconds, and boom! the heats gone.

I personally don't want to move, and do understand that theft and all has been around for as long as humanity. I also do get that we just have to deal with it, and it blows.
I'm just upset more about how they did it. Its perfect for this situation. Concrete sidewalk mounted railing for a 5 or 6 step set, with the bottom of the railing being accessible for impact because of a lack of parking blocks, or curb. Seeing as the bike was mounted to the top half, it would have only suffered superficial damage, and probably fairly negligible.
