These are a few that I haven't seen that I really want to see and always forget when I'm at Blockbuster...

Taxi Driver
There Will be Blood
Raging Bull
The Deer Hunter
Dog Day Afternoon

Probably start with Taxi driver.

118/250

A lot of the foreign stuff I just haven't been exposed to, although recently I've been watching a lot of French films. Helps when you know someone who is familiar and can recommend some of their favorites.

It depends how you define "best". And since everyone defines it differently, I have no problem with some of the movies that look out of place.

Heck, I like Juno, but I also liked Dumb and Dumber. I thought Fight Club was OK, but no way it should be where it ranked(23), and Blood Diamond (249) should be way higher. But that is just me and I know for many, many people, those rankings are exactly how they like those moves.

The good thing about these lists are it reminds me of movies I want to see, and perhaps convinces me to watch a few I wouldn't have considered before. If I see it in the $10 DVD rack, maybe I'll give it a shot.

I wonder how many of these movies HD actually owns?

I've seen 71, but I've seen bits and pieces of probably 20 more.

123.

I love movies. A few head scratchers - Iron Man has only been out for a week. The list seems skewed towards recent releases of the last 5 years - probably because so many people are online and rating movies now. Movies from the 70's 80's and 90's don't make the list.

For example - how does Ferris Bueller's day off not make the list, but Hot Fuzz does?

Agree that the list is pretty skewed

I can’t believe both Kill Bill’s on are the list

They are good movies but no where near the top 250

I get your point, and I know it's a common-held view, but I don't really buy it.

Certainly people can like whatever they want, free from critical judgment. But there are ways to start characterizing what makes 'good' art. While it's a problem as old as time, and the terms of such quantification are elusive and always being debated, I still believe they exist. Aesthetic quality, in my mind, isn't totally subjective.

For example, I don't think any one could prove that Sidney Sheldon is better than Shakespeare. And I like Sidney Sheldon!

But, you're right... these lists are great. There's so many movies on there that I want to see now, or that I had forgotten to catch!

51. I've seen parts of many more, but not the whole thing. Can I increase my number if I've watched Shawshank 50+ times?

105 for me. Pretty good, but I'm way older than the average person on this site (um...in my 50s) so I've seen a lot of those older films when they were in the theatres. Some of those are a generation thing. For example, I know younger folks love The Matrix but the missus and I have tried on two or three occasions to watch it and have not yet been able to make it all the way through. It's just not our thing. However, one of my favourite films is Tora Tora Tora. I absolutely love that movie. I recommended it some friends who found it boring. He told me that it pales in comparison to Pearl Harbor, which is right up there, in my view, as one of the most over-rated movies of all time.

50 for me. There are plenty I've always meant to get around to watching. I've only seen 2 of the top 10.
