Default Wife picked up a stray/lost dog....What do I do?

So on her way to work this morning my wife spots a dog by the highway. Being the bleeding heart she is when it comes to animals she stops and makes sure this dog can't go on the road and puts it in her vehichle and gets me out of bed to come get this dog. The dog has no collar, and that means no tags. It was pretty dirty, but it's a pretty friendly dog, teeth look pretty good so I assume that it's not a very old dog. So far I've brought it home, gave it a bit of a bath and fed it and let it have some water.

I'd call the radio station but it's a small town and on Sundays they only do recorded programming till noon. The only SPCA in the area is up in Penticton with is 65km up the road. Anyone have any other idea's for what I can do to try and find the dog's owner? I guess I could phone a vet, but it's Sunday in a small town, and I'm guessing they're probably closed.

Male or female? If it is male, is he neutered? Does the dog have a tattoo in its ear? If you can tell that it is not neutered and doesn't have a tattoo, chances are that it is a stray. The only other measure that is used is microchip, but if the dog has one of those it will certainly have a tattoo as well.

If there is a 24 hour vet in the area, they will usually accept animals and hold them until the local shelter can come pick them up.

A vet will be able to trace the tattoo and/or scan to see if the dog has a chip and is registered or not. Trying to find the owner on your own is pretty difficult and is probably a waste of your time.

The other option is to adopt the dog yourself.

Yeah, the tattoo point is a good one. How do they get along with your other dogs Syl? Are you able to keep the stray? Guess there isn't much you can do for now until some more of the local offices are open tomorrow.

Yeah, I already have two pretty big dogs, so I do not want anymore pets. Good call on the tattoo in the ear....Totally forgot about that in my paniced ways. The dog is a male that isn't neutered and there is no tatoo in the ear. So it's likely a stray, maybe it was a farm dog from one of the orchards in the area. I guess my best option will be to get in touch with a vetrinary office. Now to find one where the vet isn't in church this morning.

From the Calgary Human Society webpage:
  • Look around your neighbourhood right away, check with neighbours, the mail carrier and children playing in the area. Ask for home owners to check garages, under decks, around sheds and greenhouses etc.
  • Register your pet on PetLynx.
  • Contact City of Calgary Animal Services at 311 as they house stray dogs and cats that have been trapped under the cat control bylaw. Their address is 2201 Portland Street SE. You can also visit their website.
  • Call all vet clinics in your area, and the emergency clinics in the city - Calgary North Animal Hospital at 277-0135, Calgary Animal Emergency Clinic at 269-7822 and Shawnessy Pet Hospital at 254-5900.
  • Place a lost ad with: The Calgary Herald (235-0511), The Calgary Sun (250-4222), the Bargain Finder, or Shaw Cable (716-6010).
  • Check daily found ads in both newspapers.
  • Put up posters in your neighbourhood and deliver flyers door to door with a description of your pet.
  • Contact City of Calgary at 311 if you suspect your pet may have been hit by a car.
  • Other animal rescue organizations for you to contact include: ARF (243-1910); Pound Rescue (938-4890); Heaven Can Wait (601-2520); MEOW (230-6033) and FRFA (282-5256).
  • If it's a ferret you've lost, call Ferret Rescue and Education Society at 483-6111.
  • Don’t give up! We have returned lost pets to their owners after months, and even years, of separation.

They left out:
  • Quit your day job and dedicate your life to finding the owner.
That's a lot of stuff they expect people to do.

a dog found it's way to our farm west of innisfail a while back, about 20km west of town and it was none of the neighbors pets so i had no idea what to do. i ended up[ phoning the town office anyways just in case, and low and behold the owner had contacted the town office.

the moral of the story is that people will go to great lengths to relocate their pets, even phoning town offices a ways away. i would phone the pentiction town office anyways just in case.

Not all the time. I know that my dog is microchipped so we didn't have to get the tatoo as well. We did get the tatoo but we didn't have to.

Don't worry. If the owners have watched Billy Madison, they should know rule one of lost dogs:

"That little boy's gotta think 'You got a pet. You got a responsibility.' If your dog is lost you don't look for an hour then call it quits. You get your ass out there and you find that f###ing dog."

I've picked up a ton of stray dogs (I used to drive 22x a lot). The easiest thing to do is call the nearest emergency clinic. The dogs are usually known to them.

Hey kids, you want to see my lost doggy?

Sounds like a great way to get arrested.

Make sure to cruise the neighborhood in a panel van with FREE CANDY airbrushed on the sides.
