Default Rogers Bringing iPhone to Canada Before Year-End

http://www.canada.com/calgaryherald/...a034c8&k=41782

"We're thrilled to announce that we have a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to Canada later this year.

We can't tell you any more about it right now, but stay tuned," Rogers chief executive Ted Rogers said a statement.

I'd be more excited for this news, but something tells me that the cost of the mobility plan is going to make it completely impracticable to even consider buying an iPhone in Canada.

It would be the second model.

My money says that Apple got Rogers to come back down to earth with their data plans.

My biggest question is what happens to all the iphones that have been unofficially activated? Will those users have the chance to go on the iphone plan?

If they could bring the data plans down to earth I would definitely look into this.

How much will they charge to get it without a contract? $989 or something?

Does Rogers have a 3G network?

Rogers does have 3G (3.5G I think in Calgary). And I doubt they'll sell it without a contract.

I think the hold-up was because Roger's didn't want to drop their prices. Now that this has been announced, I can pretty much guarantee the data prices are going to drop.

Why would they need to drop the data charges, simply have an iphone only plan and you cannot connect to it unless you purchased it through Rogers.

^^ I would say that's effectively the same thing.

Bottom line is I like the iPhone, but would only get it if I could use the web browsing without having to take on a second job.

Would anyone have some advice for me?

I currently have until May 15th to re-activate my Rogers acct. and keep my cell number.(I cancelled it in Feb, as I am working away from home 'till June).

I was on an automatic billing plan month-month, then was on a 1 year contract before I cancelled my phone.

I guess what I'm asking, is: how best would I approach getting a better deal from Rogers until they release the iPhone, at which time I'd sign up for, IF they release an affordable data-plan?.
Would they let me out of a regular 1-3 year plan to upgrade to the iPhone data plan?
Am I best to re-up with them month-to-month, and wait and see?

Oh, here is a link dealing with Rogers' retentions:

thanks,
alg

Get a pay as you go phone for now for $50-100, then switch to the iPhone when it's released.

I bet they would let you upgrade, as long as the new contract ran longer than the old contract, and was for more per month.

Of course they would!? No?

is the rogers network infrastructure good enough to handle an increase in data? not sure how it all works and all that. Was roger's restricting data in the past (via insane rates) cuz they didn't have the capacity or where they just try to get as much $$ as possible?

Only Rogers really knows the answer to that I think.

Son of a gun. I bought an iphone a week ago.

Oh well, if anything, I'll just have to find a way to lock it and make rogers happy and hope they offer me a decent data plan.

just update the firmware when the next version comes out (or reinstall the current one) and it will be locked again.
