When I was like 8 years old, I somehow got onto the computer and figured out how to use the 3600 baud modem and dialed the Origin Systems BBS IN TEXAS from Calgary to download stuff for Ultima or Wing Commander or something. Little did my childhood mind realize the enourmous long-distance charges this would rack up and how my parents would kill me.
I have a Scumm emulator on my DS that allows me to play a bunch of old Lucas Art games. So I just recently completed Monkey Islands 1 and 2. Still fantastic games to this day. Currently planning on completing Loom and Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis.
What I hate about those games is they can let you get in a state where you can't win. The game doesn't tell you that. It lets you spend hours and hours down in your basement, going insane, trying to figure out that missing piece. And before the Internet, you have no resource to rely upon. Damn games.
Oh I remember that. The busy singles were so frustraing I made a script with a bunch of those AT commands (ATDT was dial if I remember) that would constantly redial until I got through.
ATDT..tone dialing...lucky! All I had was pulse dialing, ATDP, which took forever to dial each time. Tone dialing, if I remember correctly, was actually an extra charge for residents of Ontario back in the day.
I loved all of Sierra's "Quest" games. My particular favorites were the Quest for Glory games and of course the Space Quest games. I found the funniest Space Quest, was also the last one, Space Quest 6; 3 and 4 were also full of comic genious.
I also loved the old "Sam n Max: Hit the Road". That is pure classic, along with Day of the Tentacle. I know there is a new 'series' of Sam n Max games on PC, however I have avoided them. The "first season" is supposed to come to the Wii in the fall, so I will probably pick it up then.
SPeaking of Space Quest, there was an independent team that was developing a Space Quest 7, and their site is SQ7.org. UNfortunately the project was put on indefinite hold, due to legal problems with Vivendi Universal games. Here is a post from their web-sites forum dated Oct, 2007 with the producer of the project giving the details:
Quote: "Unfortunately, The SQ7.org project is being put "on-hold" for the indefinite future.
I know that this is the last thing that you'd want to hear, particularly after what CUC did to the original SQ7 project, but the current legal environment doesn't leave us much choice. Vivendi has decided that we need to either shut down, or sign over the work of the community to be used by them however they want. "
Sigh, I was kind of looking forward to seeing how this turned out. As per the post in their forum, the game was 85% at that time, and they intended to make it freeware. Sigh...
It was a Sierra game that was pirated amongst my friends (and by pirated I mean all my friends bought the game and dressed up as pirates when we played it ).
I never finished it because I'd die when I tried to launch the torpedoes from the submarine.
I remember getting really frustrated with the first one, so I went down to the range, dialed in my gun, went up and stood in front of the Captains desk and listened to him yelling at me. then I pulled out my perfectly calibrated pistol and shot the . Of course the game ended at that point, but it was such a great postal moment.
the first LSL was such a great game, especially when you went to the bar and ordered champagne or wine and the bartender would basically laugh in your face.
They don't make games like those ones anymore.

Oh yeah, I was totally high tech. Especially after the purchase of a new 14.4Kbps modem. I was the envy of all my friends
I still remember how happy I was when I found out there was a three digit code you could dial to switch off call waiting. Those were the days... getting your connection dropped because someone called and call waiting booted you out.
But I guess this is enough of a thread hijack. On the original topic, my favourite quest game was Space Quest III.
i hated that damn wizard in Kings Quest III, prick would kill you just for looking at him funny. great thread though, i grew up with all the classic Sierra games. loved the "age verification" in LSL, you just can't get that stuff anymore
