Hi all, I'm looking into possibly taking Propecia for male-pattern baldness. I'm pretty young (just turned 20), but I've been steadily losing my hair since I was about 16 or so.

I'm just wondering if anyone on CP has taken this or any other drug like it, and if there have been any benefits? Does it really work? Any side-effects you experienced because of it?

I'm just starting into preliminary research atm, so any advice or experience you would like to share would be greatly appreciated!

Not propecia in particular, but rather solutions to stop thinning hair.

yeah...it hasn't really been of great importance to me the last few years because I was kind of in denial about it, and because not a lot of people see the top of my head (I'm 6'6"). But now it has become painfully obvious that there just isn't as much hair up there as there should be

I am not losing my hair... is there a way to lose it so I look more bald?

is it your whole head or just a certain part?

^ the top of my head...the crown, and the front just above my forehead. The sides of my head are still very thick and show no signs of slowing down, and I really hope to avoid getting the "peninsula" look going...

I'm 25, started receeding a few years ago...I have just learned to live with it. I had been shaving my head since before I noticed I was losing the hair, and have just kept it up. The best thing for me is I have just learned to deal with it. Nothing can be done.

I've been on it for a year. It doesn't seem to regrow any hair but IMO and my doctor's and my wife's it seems to have slowed down or maybe stopped the hair loss. Once you start Propecia or a similar drug you need to stay on it. As I understand it, the hair loss starts again very soon after you discontinue taking the daily pills. If I was showing signs of MPB at 20 I would definitely ask my doctor to write me a prescription but be prepared to stay on it for a long time. By the way it runs about $200.00 for a 3 month supply.

So is it really worth the 800 dollars a year it will cost you? How long do you plan on keeping it up? Really, it seems baldness is only an issue for guys in their 20s. Once you get a little older, it really doesn't matter anymore. I'm 25, and it's already not bothering me. I just can't see spending 800 bucks a year on hair loss drugs.

However, maybe acupuncture can be looked into. I've used acupuncture in the past for other things, and it has worked.

My hair has been thinning for a few years and I decided to get after it before things get bad. I've been using minoxidyl 5% for 3 months now and it is slowly growing. Much cheaper than propecia; the generic stuff I bought off ebay was 7 bucks a bottle, shipped

I decided to keep on Nioxin (all three scalp treatments) for about $80 every 6 months. My hair hasn't grown back, but my recession has completely stopped and re-strengthened the hairs I do have. It is designed to get rid of DHT, the genetic chemical that is produced by male hormones as they age.

Nioxin has been known to help people grow their hair back, but I'm not quite there yet. My uncle has been using it since he was 30. He is now almost 50 and has thick, lush hair (even for a Ukrainian!)

So Nioxin does work eh?

I am using Proscar. It has 5 mg of Finasteride while Propecia only has 1 mg.

However, you only take 1/4 pill of Proscar and you take the whole Propecia pill. So in the end you get 0.25 mg more when you take Proscar.

I have thought about Nioxin, but the price scared me off. I am wondering if I should get it now.
