Before we moved to the deep SE, I used to see Dr.Kuen Chow, who works out of the Sunshine Dental Clinic (it's in the Sunridge Mall, right next to the zellers entrance!). He was EXCELLENT. I'm not a huge fan of Dentists, so I'm very picky, and it takes a lot for me to feel comfortable with one. Dr.Chow did a fantastic job, and I was very impressed. Their office direct bills too, if that's a consideration for you There are several dentists in the same office, but Dr.Chow was by far my favourite.

Sunshine Dental Centre
1460 Sunridge Mall
Calgary, AB T1X1E1
Phone: (403) 293-7545

Up in the Northwest, at Northland Professional Building, is Dr. Sean Freiberg's practice:

http://www.healthfirstdental.com/

Also, 'a what to expect on your first visit' overview:

http://www.healthfirstdental.com/art...rst-visit.aspx

EXCELLENT service in a stylish/modern large practice. He is young (35?) and really on top of things (high morale staff, modern decor, good website, top technologies, lots of choices given (pet peeve is when I only get 'one choice' for things health related), etc), his office manager Carol at the front desk is AMAZING and works through all your billing/insurance concerns, even the most minor concerns, with a big smile and tons of enthusiasim (like it is her own money she is trying to help you with) and such, and going to the dentist is always painless and pleasent. 5/5 stars from me!

Claeren.

I go to Arbour Lake Dental ( http://www.arbourlakedental.com/ ). Can't say I've had a bad experience. It's in the NW, if you have serious issues with the dentist they offer sedation dentistry, and the folks are all pretty nice. I hadn't gone in several years and had my first appointment at the beginning of April. I expected a guilt trip that could circle the globe, but they were actually quite nice about everything.

NW - Market Mall Dentrix. Dr. Greg Weleschuk. Very nice. Great work. I'm no fan of dentists but am extremely comfortable with him.

I go to Dr. Fahlman in the same Dentrix office. Like many dentists, he's done great work. What sets him apart, for me anyway, is that he's a knowledgeable guy that seems to enjoy teaching me about what he's doing. He is really easy going and great to have a conversation with. Like JBR noted, this guy makes you feel comfortable. The office is also really nice and the staff is great too.

Dr. Doty in Deer Valley is great. Very funny, great patient-doctor relationship.

The Tuscany Dental Clinic has the hottest dental hygienist in the city. I love going there.

The dentist is fairly young but he seems pretty good. He filled in a chip on one of my front teeth and it looks pretty nice.

I like the guy at Brentwood. His name is Chris. He pulled my wisdom teeth without putting me under and I had no swelling at all.

How much does the sedation cost you? I'm assuming that wouldn't be covered my most plans.

I was wondering the same thing when I went. I think I overheard somebody on the phone when I was walking out that it was in the ballpark of 500$. Don't quote me on that though, they could have been talking about something else.

A quick google search yielded results from 250$ - 300$, but those are mainly from cosmetic dentistry places. Any non-cosmetic place gave me the feeling that there is a per hour charge. Perhaps somebody else here knows better then I.

I imagine it would not be covered by insurance as it isn't technically necessary. Could be wrong about that too though! Pure speculation.

Dr. Lyndon Krahn at the Hidden Valley Dental Centre is excellent. I went to him when I lived in Calgary, and I like him well enough that I switched back to him after moving to Drumheller and finding that the dentists in Drum suck compared to him. My wife and son are extremely dental phobic, and they both think he's the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Default Watch fees

I think it is important to watch what a dentist charges for services. Make sure the dentist you go to is close to the fee guide as I have seen some dentists in Calgary vastly overcharge for some services like crowns, bridges etc.

I've always wondered about x-rays. Why are they so expensive? Or perhaps I've been getting scammed the past few years. The prices seem rather suspect to me.

When we were looking for a new dentist in Calgary, I got ahold of our insurance company's fee guide and their tips for finding a service provider. One of the questions they recommend asking relates to the fee guide. I've never heard a receptionist laugh so hard as the when I asked them whether they charged the fee guide rate. Apparently, it's way way too low in the eyes of dentists.

Obviously, if you can find a dentist that charges close to the fee guide then you're doing well. Just don't expect anyone to charge what the fee guide says. That, apparently, is ludicrous.

I went to the dentist and all he did was suck blood from my neck. DO NOT go see Dr. Acula.
