Default Wallet Maintenance

...I need some pointers. My stuff always looks dumpy.

1. My plastic cards get bent, cracked, worn...I am a credit card junky and I use the MC to pay for everything...what can I do to keep it in better shape because it seems like every couple months I could use a new card.

2. ...sometimes my cards get crap on them...little black marks...I've seen this on other peoples stuff to. Why does this happen and what can we do to prevent it.

3. Business cards. A pet peeve, but it has always seemed to me that most business cards are just slightly too long...they end up having a bend at one end because that end sticks beyond the fold of my wallet.

Kind of a silly topic I know, but what the H else are we supposed to talk about today?

Does the actual wallet have a lot to do with it? maybe I need to change to a different model.

haha great topic. Instantly reminded me of George Constanza and his giant wallet.

I think it is impossible keep cards etc in perfectly good shape. Especially if you have your wallet in your back pocket (like any real mand does). You are sitting on it all day, which is gong to put stress on it.

The only thing I can recommend is buy a wallet of decent quality leather (doesnt have to be expensive). Also, keep the wallet clean. Only carry the necessities.

A couple of years ago, I bought a bottle of Johnnie Walker and it came with a leather card holder. That became my wallet. One side has my bank cards and DL, the other side has business cards.
Your issue of the cards getting dirty is probably related to each card having it's own slot in your wallet. All my cards ride in the same slot, all of them facing forward. I forgot about dirty cards because it never happens anymore with this system.

edit* and the wallet goes in the front pocket. I actually noticed minor back problems developing from having my wallet in the back and switched years ago. Plus, the back pocket wallet system is what is causing your cards to crack.

Your wallet must be absolutely JAMMED with money!!

My take on this, I don't carry a standard wallet... just a card holder. Credit cards, debit card, DL, Health Card, insurance card... I think that's it.

I carry bills in my pocket and have been doing this since I can remember. I hate the fat wallets that fold and with a card holder I can fit it in my front pocket.

If I ever, for whatever reason, need to carry large bills (50s/100s) I use a money clip and transfer my cards over to that temporarily, so I don't have to pull out cash out of my pocket in the form of 50/100 dollar bills.

Does anyone know where to buy just a card holder wallet? I have one that I found at Winners about 4 years ago but its pretty much destroyed now. I hate big wallets. Bank card, credit cards, DL and health care card is all you will ever need. I sometimes see them as an attachment to a bigger wallet but spending $40 on a wallet just to get the minature card holder wallet inside just seems wrong to me.

That's actually not a bad idea. I have something like that too I think. I've had my current wallet though for 10+ years. It's falling apart, leaves marks on everything... but I'm attached to it now, so it'll probably stay until it's nothing more than a ripped up piece of leather....

...oh, and it's back pocket all the way.

You can get them at pretty much any wallet store... as well as some clothing stores (Harry Rosen, Holt Renfrew, etc.). You'd probably even find card holders at Mexx, Club Monaco, etc.

I used to always keep my wallet in my back pocket, but when my leg went numb for two weeks straight and created a real scare, I am all about the front pocket.

Winners usually has a good selection of nice quality wallets and card holders. I just switched from card holder that had a money clip on it. I went back to the standard one fold. I got tired of not being able to find the right card at the right time. I'm generally a jacket pocket or back pocket guy but it has to come out when I sit down. Does that sentence seem a little wrong to anyone else?

I tried one of these, but it ended up demagnetizing a lot of my cards. Did anyone eles ever have this problem? Do cards even need to be magnetized anymore?

Have you seen card readers out there that read something other than the magnetic stripe on the back of your card?

I'll have to check out a few of those places. I tried a card holder with a money clip once, but I keep my wallet in my back pocket so either it was poking me in the ass or when I flip it around it started to tear through my jeans. That one had a metal one.. a leather clip my work.
