The number of visible minorities in Canada is expected to double by 2017 and form more than half the population in greater Toronto and Vancouver, according to new projections that highlight the country's growing diversity.
If current trends hold, one in every five faces will be non-white in 12 years when Canadians mark the 150th anniversary of Confederation, Statistics Canada said yesterday.
Does it matter? Should we be importing more Poles? (just kidding!!)

I read not that long ago from a different source that right right now one in ten Canadians are of Asian decent.
Personally, I don't see it as a problem. Living in Vancouver for several years, (a city with a very high immigrant rate of people from Asia), you don't see too many new Canadians from Asia being "bums" or "panhandlers". Most are extremely productive and contribute a lot to the country.

As an Albertan, I'm more worried about the Saskatchewan Invasion force...errr immigrants. Crazy Flatlanders. We're on to you and your sleeper cells. Vico and Bunny Hugs....keep your evil serum and restraining devices to yourselves.

It's true, at least in Calgary, there's 100,000 Asians here among the almost 1 million Calgarians.

Poles are fine. But keep out the Irish.
I hope it works out. It could serve as an example for how international relations should be conducted. I think the trick is to build a "common" culture based on equality and inclusiveness. People come to Canada because of our ideals, opportunity and the chance to build a life. If we can accomodate everyone, and everyone can accomodate us, then we all win in the long run.

If this is true there are some weird scenarios that come to mind, like for some reason I just can't picture an East Indian with a Newfie accent.....

It's pretty cool actually. A friend of mine is ethnic Chinese, but her family has lived in Jamaica for generations. She's lost her accent but her mom, a 58 yr old Asian woman talks with a perfect Rastafarian accent. You kind of expect her to sound one way but instead it's WAYYYYY off the mark... pretty awesome!

Firstly, I think its 1 out of 10 in Calgary are of visible minority, majority of those being Asian... but I'm sure I heard Calgary is 90% white...
Secondly, so long as we import the best and brightest, I don't care if they are Asian, Black, Brown or Vulcan... if we are just bringing in whoever... then its a problem. I think need to tighten our immigration/refugee system to make sure we aren't allowing terrorists, criminals and societally useless people into our country en masse.
Thirdly, I think immigration should be a provincial thing as well, that way if somewhere like Quebec wants to protect their culture, and if Alberta only wants the best and brightest, they are free to do so. In fact, I think Quebec already has this power.

I was reading something somewhere, the usual, that indicated Canadian models are becoming more sought after for the rather exotic, racially mixed look that is becoming reflective of Canadian society . . . . well, maybe Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver.

No dreads that's part of the shock value- it's obviously not Adrienne Clarkson but her look is more or less the same. Picture looking at this:
and hearing:
"Eh Kreese-to-fuh! You are looookeen ffffhat lhhayte-lee! Your momma been fheeding you ahgain?"
:biglaff:
It's seriously the most cool / awesome thing you'll ever hear. You'll do a double take, I guarantee it, everyone does. She even acts like she's from the island, always welcoming you in and stuffing you with food.

The problem is our employment and education system relegates these highly trained engineers, doctors, scientists, and business people to taxi drivers and fast-food workers. They get pushed to the margins of 3rd class society and many of them go back to their native countries, disappointed with ours.
I was working at student loans one year and this middle-aged East Indian man comes in for a student loan. He's dressed as a security guard and proceeds to tell me how fortunate it is that one of the professors at the University actually helped him out with a reference because he was a senior radiologist in his home country and he had been stuck as a security guard since immigrating to Canada 6 years ago and his family had already moved back out of dire straits.

It likely wouldn't happen a lot though. People who immigrate from other countries tend to cluster themselves in the big cities.
It's different now than when my family moved here in the 70s. Back then, most immigrants were told where they had live (at least at first), and where they had to work for a specified amount of time. My family was part of a wave of eastern Europeans brought over to work in mines up north and we weren't allowed to move for quite a few years. Today, indentured labour is considered a bad thing (at least within our own borders) and immigrants are allowed to move anywhere. At least not immigrants from particular countriss. (They didn't have the same restrictions for immigrants from western Europe and even today, this is represented in Canada's socio-economic divisions - but that's a different topic I guess).
Some countries though (like Singapore), still don't allow too many people of one ethnicity to live in one area as an attempt to stop enclaves from popping up.

Thats actually becoming a big 'problem' for Australia/New Zealand.
Millions upon millions of Asians would love to move to ANZAC because there's tons of space, first world living conditions, generally like a warm Canada (and quite close to their origins too).
One of the big future social-issues is going to be the ANZAC's trying to keep the hordes from hopping into boats and heading south, Cuban/Florida style.
