I'm personally quite sick of people taking everything so seriously. Anytime it involves a brown person it's racist. But we're allowed to make fun of Edmonton and Ukranians for perogies.

I actually think its hillarious - and I have met MIke Richards in person and I can tell you he is far from Racist.
As for Boomer - okay so he crossed the line, and really it's nothing you and I have never said or never will say we have all thought it. Give the guy a break he didn't threaten to kill anyone, or promote any sort of racism, he made a mistake at worst case scenario.
We all do make mistakes, GET OVER IT.

He does alot more than just the indian accent. He's got entire skits of mocked chinese accents (both cantonese and mandarin) which I hate.
A white guy could never get away with 80% of what Peters does.

I used to listen and laugh at that actually, till one day I think they could have been talking about me--a caller basically described to a 'T' what my bf at the time and I did at a previous game to celebrate goals, etc (no PDAs or anything). That didn't bother me actually, but I wrote to the station because I didn't like when Richards said right after that gay people shouldn't go to the 'dome for games and that we should just stay home. I thought that crossed the line.
Basically, I never thought the segment itself was bad because it was done in fun with no malice--hey I try to play spot the Q**** myself when out and about--but when they say things like "stay home", I couldn't let that one slide. I guess the offensive part was the fact they were implying that you have to be straight to go to a Flames game. Probably not something the official home of the Flames wants to get out there.
I haven't listened to the show since.
|
Yes he does to that segment still, unfortunately. What was your celebration?

I'm totally offended by this comment and demand an apology immediately for such insensitivity. I'll have you know that Red Deer is a bastion for culture and harmonious tolerance........

Everyone is soooooo touchy with stuff. If you were really truly offended then file a complaint with the Canadian Broadcast Standards Counsel.
The sooner EVERYONE can learn to laugh at themselves, others and not hit the PC button as soon as ANY comment is made on race, religion or sex...the better off we all will be. People talk about equality alot...the easiest way to achieve that is to cut all these 'taboos' from our society.
It wasn't like the guy rewrote Mein Kampf.

So the theory is that as soon as we learn to accept racism in all its forms we'll be better off?

No kidding. You know who I think needs to relax? Everyone who thinks comedy and free speech is under assault. Get a grip. Why can't people investigate and consider whether what someone said is offensive, without being told they're wildly PC and need to lighten up.
No one was calling for Boomer's head. No one is saying he is in fact a racist. No one wants to ban Fan960 or have him fired. I listen to the guy all the time, and while I'm not a fan, I certainly don't mind him. I love irreverent humor and I love comedy that targets and makes fun of race stereotypes. The point here isn't to prevent white people or straight men or whatever from expressing themselves (or whatever paranoid fantasy is being advanced by the 'lighten up' crowd). The point is to ask whether what he said was unnecessarily stereotypical of aboriginal peoples. Some people feel it was, some people feel it wasn't. If you feel his comments were denigrating of aboriginal peoples, you have to ask whether they provide any valuable contribution to public discourse or harm it.
If you believe racism exists, then you probably also believe that its harmful to the social fabric. You probably also believe it exists and persists through repetition in things like jokes. While no one is obligated to care about, or even believe in, racism, when public figures profit off of making derogatory comments about a particular group, that group ought to have the right to ask why what was said was said; what exactly is funny about it; what is the point of it? I think the right to define one's various identities (group or individual) outweighs whatever weak right one has to crack jokes at the expense of others.
Anyway, it seems like he regrets what he said (for whatever reason), and he apologized. That's very good of him. One cannot ask for more than that.
Sigh... flame away.

I'm with you 4x4. Racism will never be a non-factor until we can ignore racial jokes/comments.
The fact that Boomer (and everyone else) needs to think of race as having different rules than anything else exacerbates the issue, it doesn't evolve it.

I've been arguing the other side of this debate. I just acknowledged that fatso articulated his opinion very well and it made me consider his point.

Thats because 80% of Red Deer's population is originally from the Maritimes or Saskatchewan.
