Default Zip.ca's Blu-Ray DVD Deal Of The Week

Was checking out my Ziplist today and noticed a banner for a $10 Blu-Ray deal. Clicked on it, and thought, damn, that's a great deal, too bad I don't have a Blu-Ray DVD player.

I know some of y'all do however, so here's the link:

http://www.zip.ca/DoorCrasher/

This week is "I Am Legend" for $10 flat, free shipping. Limited amount available, I would guess like 50 or 100 or so, and they go on sale every Tuesday at 12 noon ET. Smoking deal.

DVD this week is 3:10 To Yuma. Don't know if anyone cares. If nobody replies, I will stop bumping this thread in the weeks to come.

For the record, all you have to do is sign up to join theor "community," which essentially means creating an account so you can use their forums or whatever. You don't actually have to become a rental member. But it is an awesome service. I recommend it all the time.

I use Rogers Direct which is powered by Zip, so I think I could access this. I wonder if they'll ever sell off some of their HD-DVDs?

I've actually always wanted to talk to somebody who uses this service. I take it your experiences are generally positive? What's the deal?

The deal:
For $25 a month, you get 3 DVDs sent to you along with pre-paid postage return envelopes. When you watch a DVD, you put it in the envelope and send it back. Ignoring Ziprefill which you don't get for the first month anyway, as soon as they get the DVD back, they send you a new one. So I usually watch 3 DVDs/week x 4 weeks in a month, so 12 DVDs for $25 = about $2 per rental. That's a tiny bit better than Blockbuster's $6.

You make a 'Ziplist' on their web site listing the movies that you want to rent and they try to pick from the top of your list. But if those movies are in high demand, you get ones that are lower down.

I've been a member for over a year now and I'm getting extremely sick of them. It may not be a problem in Calgary, but here in Ottawa, delivery is horribly, horribly slow. I'll finish watching all 3 movies on the weekend and toss them in the mail on Sunday night. Two days to get to their warehouse, one day processing... and they are marked as returned on Wednesday. I get new ones sent to me on Thursday, meaning they arrive the next Monday. That's over a week to have a turn-around on my DVDs. Of course, Zip-refill helps a little bit... but it's not enough to keep me as a member. If May is as bad as April has been, I'm leaving Zip.

Yeah, that is the one complaint I have also, although it's a minor one in my case. The "Zip refill" thing does help, like you say, but I swear they only focused on that with me for the first 4-6 weeks, and now it doesn't do a heckuva lot of difference.

But for me and my movie-watching/DVD rental habits, Zip is a godsend. I am a total dumbass when it comes to finding a movie I want at any of the chain rental stores. Either it's not available or out of print or already rented or I can't remember what I was looking for or I can't decide. It usually turns into an hour long ordeal and I get all stressed and my OCD kicks in and I just say "screw it, I don't care." lol

Now I just watch whatever shows up in my mailbox, and guess what, it was on my Ziplist so I must've wanted to see it. Heh. Saves me a lot of hassle that way. And I usually watch a couple movies during the week and not on weekends, and also one at a time, so the turnaround is not as bad for me. It seems I constantly have a new one arriving a couple of days after I send one out, and the queue just keeps on sliding up a notch.

It works best though for non-new release rentals though. If you want to check out the Coen bros. back catalogue, or some old Kurosawa films, or Super Troopers, and you don't care what order they come in, it's a perfect fit. But if you want to see There Will Be Blood during its first week on DVD, you're better off going to Blockbuster. It's not for everybody, but it seems to fit my lifestyle perfectly.

Ro which plan did you go with? The unlimited 3 DVD at a time one?

I've thought about signing up for zip, but don't know anyone else who has (until now). I would be interested in BluRay as well. What's the selection and turn around for those like?

I have Zip specifically for Blu Ray and Im not 100% satisfied.

I'd say 40% of the time, they "accidentally" send the DVD instead of the Blu Ray version. Super annoying.

I still don't think they have the stock in place to adequately ensure you get a Blu Ray quickly, but that's just me.

Do you guys report your returned DVDs on the website? I know I usually do, and it seems to ensure a faster turnaround time for your next movie.

And like Ro says, firing a movie on your list the moment you think of it is a great way to not miss movies. I know I would often miss some before.

But it all comes down to individual preference. I like not going to Blockbuster, personally.

I wouldn't be using it specifically for BluRay, but if the movie I want to rent is made in BluRay then I want that over DVD. But a lot of older movies that I want to watch aren't in BluRay. So I'll probably have a balance between the two and it won't be so bad.

And what plans did everyone go with?

Yeah, I did the 3 DVD one. I seem to watch a couple per week, so it's not that it's so much an amazing deal, it's that I don't have to deal with the headaches of fighting through all the BS that comes with a visit to Blockbuster or Rogers or whatever. It also helps that there's a PO drop box both right outside my door and right beside my place of work.

The #1 plus for me is the selection. Even relatively well-known flicks like "Waiting For Guffman," "Wild Strawberries," "Yojimbo," and "Blood Simple," all on my Ziplist, are impossible to find at many rental outlets, especially where I live. So it's mostly about options for me.

When I started getting pissed off about turn-around time, I started reporting my movies returned 2 or 3 days before I actually returned them. (ie marking them as returned on Thursday morning, knowing full well I wasn't going to finish watching the DVD until Saturday)

My other option was to get 2 memberships... they don't allow two memberships in the same household, but I could just get them to send to my neighbors place. It's much better than a 6-DVD membership since 2 3-DVD plans would have no extra postage charge. Maybe next fall... I figure with the weather getting nicer, I'll likely only be watching DVDs on rainy days.
