And I Don't Care...

This question has probably been asked before, but I'm going to ask anyway.
I'm interested in getting into downloading music (I'm a little behind the times in these matters) and am wondering what is the best site and/or software for this sort of thing. I've visited a few sites (imesh, kazaalite, mp3advance etc.) and they all seem to require some kind of monetary outlay. Is it not possible to download music without paying something? I thought this was what attracted most people to it. What is the best combination of performance, cost(if any), ease of use etc.? Also, with regards to registering on these sites, do you have to put your real name? If you do, will you then be flooded with millions of useless e-mails and such? Legal implications?
I know that's a lot of questions, but I'm fairly clueless regarding this stuff, so any help from the uber-knowledgeable CPers would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

"Wait. That's illegal."

"No it isn't, I don't want it to be illegal, therefore it isn't! That's the way it works!"

"Creed SUCKS!!! I hate you, and I hate the bands you like!"
I'm sorry I'm obsessed with that video Red vs. Blue - Intro to the Internet

Seriously, I use KaZaa Lite, don't have many problems with it

It depends, if you are not savvy with the net, KazzaLite is the best youll get, and it sucks. But their is another way, a little complicated but results are out of this world. You have to download a program called mirc(mirc.com) its like a chat server, that allows files to be transfered very quicly. After downloading this, there are certian websites(packetnews.com) that you can go and search for music, once youve found it, you can enter the chat room and request, if fellow is busy, you can wait in quene(sp?). Once in the chat rooms you can search through all of the files for any of the Bots on whats called the f-serve, finding pretty much ANYTHING ever made if you look for long enough that includes underground and rare releases as well, any genre from rock-hip hop.

Now it may all sound hard, but after you do it 2-3 times, it friggnen simple, for further instruction the MIRC website offers help on how to download and install.

hmmmm, not a bad idea. However, I'm waaaay too lazy to do that (Maritimer remember :P) and since there's only one song I can't find, I'll ask if anyone can find it for me.

"Hit by the Rock" I'm not sure who it's by, but it used to be the Cape Breton Oilers goal song.

lyrics are something like:

You're in for the whirl
You're in for that shot
How does it fe-el?
To be hit by the rock?
(Oilers)
A Cape Breton rock?
(Oil-ers)
[fiddle music]
Cape
Bre - TON

I'll send anyone that finds that song $20 in the mail, plus whatever I can find as thanks.

I use limewire and I have no problem with it. I bought limewire pro. They have a basic one you don't have to pay for.

Use WinMX.

Its pretty good for MP3s, and it works exactly like Napster.

You can get it from www.dowload.com

Take it from me, as far as music content goes WinMx, limewire, kazaa, kazaa lite or anyother search based downloadable program are all the same. The feautures may be better, but you will still never find those rare and hard to find albums and songs. And these programs are beoming more and more limited with the crackdown the music industry is taking or piracy.

If you really wanna find the good stuff you gotta work for it.

I've tried quote a few file sharing programs, and I keep going back to Bearshare (www.bearshare.com). I find it usually works quite well, and it's free unless you want the pro version.

personelly I listen to alot of Hip-hop, as well as rock and jazz. I download all the music I like. When I find cds i really enjoy, by artists who deserve support I go and purchase their album bar none. Dont get me wrong I buy 2-3 cd a week, but you will never see me buy a Clapton record, or 50 Cent(not that id wnat to) or Macy Gray not beacuse the cds are no good(50cent is nogood but whatever) but beacuse these millionaires dont need my hard earned dough, im burnin there music, those other guys that are keeping it real, making music from the heart and not allowing themselves to be bought up by the corporate machines that ARE major record labels, they are the ones that should be recieving my jack, and will be.

There's no way Im EVER throwing down my cash every week for this mass produced, media friendly garbage that is mainstream music.

Thanks, but no thanks

Yeah, I have kazaa, and it does have a lot of adware, viruses, etc.

My virus defs are up to date, but I still scan my computer every day after I use it to make sure nothing else has crept in. I know computer geeks who say whenever they check someone's comp that has problems, most often it stems from kazaa.

I've used WinMx, it is very similar.

Actually, I find SoulSeek the best program. It's not ad-based like Kazaa is, and there are absolutely NO coded songs. It even tells you the quality of the song you're getting.
