Fan960 racist comments
Just curious if anyone else heard what I heard on the Fan on Friday, around 4:30pm. Normally, stuff like this doesn't bother me, but the ignorance of the guy on with Rob Kerr was astounding.
They were discussing the idea that maybe Jordan Tootoo was older than he claims, by virtue of the fact that some Native communities don't keep really accurate birth records, and maybe this gave him an advantage in the juniors.
Fair enough.
But then, the guy goes on the say something to the effect of how native women just pop out kids, and let them run wild clubbing baby seals, "or whatever it is they do up there". Kerr suggests he shouldn't be talking like that, and the guy replies that he doesn't care, and go ahead and "sue me".
I was struck not just by how ignorant a comment that was, but the tone of the dude's voice, which seemed to be full of disdain for Native Canadians. He wasn't joking around at that point.
Did anyone else hear this? Comments? Thoughts?

Was this like a call-in show or was it an actual guest using his real name and job title?

That's awful. Who is this guy?
I know you touched on it, but could you say a little more about how Kerr or his producer responded to this moron?
|
Kerr said that he shouldn't talk like that, and the guy said "yeah, well I don't care so sue me. Kirch (the program director) wants controversy, here it is", or something to that effect. They then went on to discuss how Dave Rowe no longer has a mullet. Real high brow radio.
Like I said, normally this stuff doesn't bother me, but here I am, 24 hours later, still thinking about it.

I heard the same thing, It was very obvious that they were just being sarcastic. It was the regular guy who's on with Kerr at that time.
They didn't say outright that they were just being sarcastic, but that's what srcasm is.

Labeling it as sarcasm doesn't make it acceptable though.

I didn't hear the comments you are referring to in the OP... But... If they were as mild as you said, what's the problem? Natives popping out kids? Clubbing baby seals? They DO do that. Just like catholics or dutch popping out kids and just like Albertans hunting.
I'm personally quite sick of people taking everything so seriously. Anytime it involves a brown person it's racist. But we're allowed to make fun of Edmonton and Ukranians for perogies.

I thought it was Boomer. It wasn't politically correct, that's for sure, but it came across much more sarcastically than described in the OP.

Ah it was probably just Mike Richards, now that guy is an ***. I personally hate those commercialls advertising his show.... "we don't care if you're offended" ... what a great way to talk to your audience.

It was "Boomer" who made the comment in question. Sclitheroe, you must not listen to the show often because he and Kerr often go off on silly tangents like this. How about last week when they talked about how they liked Communism? Or a few months ago when they talked about excessive violence and how it is good for sports(or something like that)?
There was no "disdain" for natives IMO, just Boomer being Boomer - like it or hate it.

No, he's a racist. Haven't you heard him do the Vijay imitation? White people that impersonate or even talk about brown people are racists.

IMO, the kind of sarcasm they were using, they could have said just about anything and it would have been acceptable. That was the point of how they were talking - completely opposite of what they believed.
If course there are times when even sarcasm is not acceptable. But this was perfectly acceptable. To be fair though, it may have been hard to pick up that they were being sarcastic. To me, it was totally obvious.

You don't brush an entire group of people with the same stroke...it's called ignorance.
I'm not a guy who is all PC, in fact I find it annoying, but stuff like this I think is a bit over the top. Whether it's sarcasm or not, it shouldn't be said.
All that being said, I didn't hear the actual clip and I do enjoy the TV show The Office and they often have stuff like that too, so maybe it wasn't bad. I'd just hope it wasn't anyways

Nah, I've been known to make off-colour jokes on occasion, he's just an ass, belittling anyone who disagrees with any of his narrowminded opinions. I don't even care what his opinions are, I just don't need to hear him mocking people who think differently than he does. (with the FAN's corporate complicity, to boot)

I edited my post afterwards, because as soon as I entered it, I realized that I laugh at some of that as long as it's not to the point of being offensive.

Yeah because every brown person sounds like Apu from the Simpsons. Richard's Vijay immitation has nothing to do with reality and is only poking fun at an obvious stereotype about "brown" people in general. Vijay doesn't sound anything like that immitation actually, so its more racist than it is being a joke based on reality, like his Stalone joke.
In regards to Richards, I stopped listening to that moron years ago, i'm glad to know he still uses the same awesome material though. High brow indeed.
