I have this game for xbox. Anyone else think it's the best game ever made? When the season was cancelled I was too saddened to play the game, but my love has returned. Video games are the university student's kryptonite.
Does anyone play the game? Any hints, secrets, glitches that you've noticed?
My Flames just won the cup in 2006 franchise mode!

I was flown out by EA to test play this game, I found it disapointing somewhat. It's fun with a group of people but I give ESPN the edge this year. But I really haven't been into hockey video games this year as much as previous years...

I prefer ESPN NHL 2K5.
I have both, but I find EA to be too..... magnetic I suppose. ESPN feels more real I guess.

I haven't tried ESPN's version, I'm too brand loyal to give it a try. However NHL 2005 was the worst edition ever put out by EA. I still pay it because it is hockey but I don't play it as much as I did 2004, and I can't play 2004 anymore because it doesn't have the 2004 Flames roster.

I havent played it in a while since winning the cup. I thought it was ok but it could be better and there were bugs in it(the PC version) that annoyed me like when you're playing on the road in career mode you cant change your goalie but you can change the computers goalie.

I used to love the NHL games, until I tried Fifa '05. Can't go back to hockey now.

the game is much better if your playing online takes alot of the hitting out of the way, not so arcade style anymore

I've never been big into the sports games for PS2 or the comp but I am totally addicted to FIFA05. It's a great game.

I think I'll check out FIFA2005. I loved the first FIFAs for n64 haha.
Never played espn 2k5 but I might check that one out too... can you play it online? The one drawback of xbox nhl2005 online is that it's only one player.

Yes it is online and I agree with the above posters, ESPN 2k5 is superior to EA 2005. Give it a try, you won't be dissapointed.

I've never owned a console in my life so I have EA's 2k5 for PC, it's great and helps me pass by many 3 hour breaks in between lectures

Reading things like this make we wanna rush right out and buy a laptop so I can play these games at university too.
I am always curious as to what everyone is playing on their laptops. They are never playing the game claled "class notes part 3.doc" or "lab_report.pdf"
I bet espn nhl2ks is more fun.

I've heard mixed reviews on it. My cousin owns a PS2 and told me it completely sucks except for the skills competition. I would still try it though if I had a console and will try the next one seeing as if I cant afford to get an XBox 2 or PS3 I'll be getting an XBox or PS2.

I like NHL 2005, but I wish you could play classic teams like an 80's battle of Alberta, or in playoffs to see the Dome chanting go flames go wearing the C of Red, but overall I like the game.

I own NHL 2005, and played it quite a lot until recently. It's a decent game overall, but there are just some STUPID things that EA completely forgot about this year.
1. Creat Player - the biggest p*ss-off for me ever. I know they spent so much time on the rest of the game that they didn't have time or whatever, but then the game itself isn't all that different from previous years! It annoyed me.
2. WTF? Why is there no "League Leaders" statistics? Just not paying attention.
3. Can't change other team's jerseys. Boo...
Other than that (and a few other minor things), the game is fine. Except for the bloody hitting. It's the worst I've ever seen. Just like someone mentioned: Magnetic. It seems the CPU can knock your man down from ANYWHERE on the ice, he could even be on the other side, and still eliminate you. That chaps my ass. Also, breakaways. You're in the clear! Oh wait, they ALWAYS catch up and either hook you, or somehow throw a shoulder into you and stop you dead in your tracks - from behind.
Sorry for ranting, it's just I had nobody to bitch about it to this whole time. NHL2006 better be the best damn game ever, or I'm done with video games. Hell, I'm probably old enough anyway.

NHL 2005 is the best EA NHL game since 94 in my opinon. Ever since 95 EA had royally screwed up the skating models, I couldn't stand it. Now saying this, I can't really be sure 2004 or anything before it is better, but the way 2005 plays is fabulous. Of course it has it's need to be fixes, but if EA keeps the same gameplay and fixes the bugs and other admin issues (create a player, stats) 2006 will be a sweet game.
Although I'd love to see the addition of broken sticks. So many nowadays with composites not to have them in the game.

The aggression/hitting power etc. settings are all the way down, but I play on all-star so I guess that makes it harder
But yeah, they mainly need to fix the hitting. Broken sticks and more losing of helmets would be sweet.

I find poke-checking is better than body checking. It seems that some of the top players are not allowed to be body checked when they have the puck. Which sucks because landing a huge body check is so satisfying.
In NHL2004 I scored on probably 80% of my breakaways, and didn't a chance to score many shots from out far. It is the other way around for me in NHL2005. I can't even get a breakaway anymore and most of my goals come from shots from between the top of the faceoff circles and the bluelines. It seems that they fix one thing and break another thing. I'd like to be able to score from a variety of places at any given time. It seems that each year there is one easy way to score, and too easy to stick to that method. Scoring in any way other than the 'easy method' seems like it is just luck.
My other complaint is reation time after you've pressed the button. I can be standing in front of the net and the rebound will come out to me, I'll press the shoot button, but the player won't shoot for about a second. Same thing goes for hits, sometimes the player won't immediately hit. I've tried different controllers too and get the same reaction out of them.

I have the game and I like it a lot. I thought 2004 was a pretty good game, and I think 2005 improved on that.
The website I run, intheslot.net, is dedicated to this game (NHL 2005) as well as Sega's game too (and Midway and Microsoft for that matter as well). We offer some add-ons for the game which make it more enjoyable (both graphical and gameplay)
