Yappy Dogs

My brother and his wife have a little dog . . . he was yappy when he was a puppy, but they trained him well and he's actually a great dog to have around.

It always annoys me when people brand little dogs as "yappy" or big dogs as "dangerous" but never seem to place any blame on the owner. I'm certainly not directing that statement to anybody in this thread, just a pet peeve from a neutral observer.

I hate that too... everytime I tell someone my dogs Rottweiler they go "OHHH better be careful around your daughter" (shes 1.5 years old)

Crap I couldnt ask for a better dog, he LOVES her and she LOVES him too. She can (and has) jammed her finger in his eye and he didnt even flinch. When we had her birthday party he got a party hat, and was in the hall playing with the kids. But to anyone who hasnt met him its all "Lock him up around the kids"

I have a lot of fun with my dog... Camping, working outside, playing in the yard.

My wife doesnt like it when I sneak up behind her and tackle her to the ground... My dog however loves it.

If one needs to de-bark their dog, they shouldn't have it to begin with.

to warn of certain things. all a dog needs is proper training to curb it. debarked is more annoying to me than a bark. i used to walk around the pond in mckenzie towne and theres a pomeranian that had been debarked and it is fricken annoying.

A debarked dog doesnt wake the neighbours up at 6am. I don't buy the warn of certain things argument. 99.999% of barking is just excessive noise. Plus most dogs no matter how trained will still bark at other dogs or people nearby.

First thing not to do is to buy a dog from Petland. Unless you want a yappy, psycho dog. If people did any type of research before buying a dog, Petland would not be in the business of selling dogs. Seeing big breeds like golden retrievers, labs and bermese mountain dogs in those small display areas with the metal grate flooring is hard to see without getting angry.

I'm sure there are exceptions to the rule regarding puppy mill dogs but the majority of them have mental problems.

This is just plain not true. I would say 90% of the dogs at dog parks and what not are very nonvocal. The noisy ones are the ones that are stuck in the backyard or deck all day and night with nothing to do.

My dog started barking a lot when she would sit on the deck or looked out windows. I managed to train her out of it using a trick that has worked for many many many dog owners. What you do is take a plastic juice container and fill it up partially with spare change (or any metal stuff that will make noise). Whenever your dog is doing something you don't want them doing, throw the container to land somewhere near the dog. They instantly stop their activity. The key is to try and do this without them seeing you throw it. The dog basically thinks that whenever they bark the sky falls on them. This training trick works ridiculously well and you eventually won't need to use the juice container anymore. Now my dog only makes one or two barks to be let in or out or if she is really itching to go for a walk.

I am against debarking surgeries as I see them unnecessary.

Ah the memories. There used to be a place in Elgin and I think it had a white picket fence. They had a few yappers who were debarked and anytime we walked by they would follow us for the length of the fence trying to bark, but it sounded more like a squeaky cough.

I see no harm in exercising caution around a big dog, especially for little kids, even if they dog seems harmless. Why? Because EVERYTHING goes crazy. People go crazy, birds go crazy, fish go crazy, cats go crazy and dogs go crazy. Sometimes dogs snap and attack people. It's not very likely, but it happens. If the neighbours little yappy dog goes nuts on you or your kid, it's not a big deal because the dogs only a swift kick from oblivion. But if a large dog goes bug nutty of a kid it could be life threatening, even for adults.

Personally I couldn't trust any animal 100% around my theoretical kid and I wouldn't have a large dog if I had a young kid. And I've never been attacked by a dog and I've lived with dogs my whole life.

I just got a new puppy, and we had 3 to choose from. One was really barky, one was really whiny, and the other never made a peep. That was HUGE in deciding which one to get, as I hate yappy annoying dogs. We got the quiet one for that reason.

I think part of the problem with little yappy dogs is that owners think they are cats and don't train them properly. Any dog that is properly trained and not neglected should have no problems keeping quite. IMO debarking is totally unnecessary. It doesn't stop the dog from barking, it just makes it quieter. Only training the dog will stop the barking and no surgery is needed. I lived down the street from a debarked dog, and it made noise all the time. It sounded really sad listening to the half-barking.

You seem to have a very short memory.

My old dog used to bark at anything that went by the yard. And he stopped when I told him. Big deal, he was also:

-[u]A perfect off-leash dog in the city[u]
-Completely harmless
-Careful of those smaller than it (kids and other dogs)
-Courageous (actually got into it with a feakin' moose to defend my ex -who was walking him without me)
-Obedient, as in never ran-off too far, did as he was told etc etc.

So if I get all that and my dog barks a little, big deal. Sounds to me like you're just another lazy pet owner who has no business having a hamster, let alone a dog. Because you just don't get it.

I'll want to de-bark you for such a rediculous post.

Don't make me laugh, you confirm my points by basically admitting Murphy barked at everyone who went by. Just because you can downplay the annoyance doesn't mean your neighbours do. Why does debarking my dog make me a lazy pet owner? Sorry I don't want to annoy my neighbours with constant yapping. It'd be nice if we could debark people who just like to hear the sound of their own voice.
