Default What is your work environment like?

I was thinking about this today as we have been having a lot of fun at work lately. As the title says and how is the performance of your team and/or individuals?

For me, my department is very much fun & games. Production is pretty good, I don't think work suffers as a result of our light hearted pranks and games. It makes things loose and is good team bonding. The other departments like to have fun but not like we do. They'll send some jokes through emails and they'll chatter, but they are pretty hard working. Overall things are pretty good and everybody works hard at their jobs while still having fun with their co-workers.

I've been in environments where work doesn't get done because people are just unhappy or people have too much fun games and as a result people are also unhappy with their jobs and/or co-workers.

Very old school conservative, no pranks, no foul language, no dirty emails, no long hair, no facial hair, Shirt tie and jacket are a must, very slow moving, and worst of all no voice-mail!

Wow I feel better about my job

I'm a firefighter, so our work environment is pretty unique. After 5 pm we can do pretty much whatever we want, as long as we're ready when the siren goes off. We also have the airfield maintenance department in our shop, so when we have them around (8-5) we help out.

Our personnel works together pretty well. We are a union shop, so there is some griping, of course, but no real dissention or anything.

Outside of school, I work with kids aged 0-5.
Which involves wiping away tears, being the bad guy, discipline, convincing children to eat their sandwich, wiping... unpleasant bathroom messes, acting like I am 5, painting faces, making crafts, running around, blowing bubbles, picking grass, finger painting, singing songs, etc.
No voicemail, no computer, no lunch break.

Well I wish I owned ATCO but alas

It's direct order of Mr. Ron Southern, none who works for the ATCO Group can have voicemail

He is an old school guy and believes that if you, call someone should pick up the phone

Some people love it, some people hate it

It's just a nuisance because I only there a few days a week so when I come back I have 5 or 6 notes telling me to call so and so back

Man that's awesome. I would kill to have your job. You are so lucky. You actually get paid just to have fun. It makes suckers like me that actually do real work feel unlucky.

It is fun, but it's exhausting. I run the summer day camps and have to be super organized ALL the time, I can't come in to work hung over or tired.
I also have to deal with parents which isn't always super fun.
But at least every day is different, Thursdays we do field trips, I think this year we're taking the kids to the Stampede I get to go on the kiddy rides haha

I work with a bunch of incompetent idiots (save for about 6 people) and a director who believes highly in nepotism and therefore has hired a completely useless manager and removed our very competent former manager.

Fairly relaxed.

2 IT persons, we handle roughly 462 users across Canada (that excludes Edmonton, Leduc, Nisku, Lloyd - of which there are IT up there for them).

Roughly 160 of them in Calgary (spread between 5 different locations - downtown, to NE, to Foothills industrial park).

Some days its non stop on the phone and running around with no time for lunch or break, other days we are playing memoir44 or another 2 person game with our deskphones forwarded to our cell phones. Atmosphere is collared shirt and nice pants (normally dark jeans or dockers).

I'm still going to. I've managed to save up enough money for four full semesters. I'm still young.

I never said his work was "not real". Your quotes are wrong and misleading, I never said "not real". Please edit your post accordingly or I shall report you.

You definitely implied it.

(bolding mine)

That implies that Chid does not do "real work".

For some people, this might sound like fun, but to me it sounds like the gates of the 8th circle of hell.

I volunteered with kids that were 7-10 for 3 years and it was tolerable. I spent 10 minutes in a dayhome that a family friend runs with 6 kids aged 2-5 and I was attempting to quell the urge to kill the whole time.

People who deal with numerous kids of that age have the patience of a saint.
