Safety: get the 5 Star Saab 9-3
Comfort and reliability are vastly improved, plus with a turbo 4 cyl, you can get good gas mileage when you don't need the oomf.

The 2009 version might be different but the previous generation of the Forester had very little space in the back seat for kids. You've got to move the front seat up at least half way to fit a rear facing car seat in the back.

Wow you guys, I haven't logged onto CP since last night and didn't anticipate all these responses. THANK YOU so much for giving me your true opinions...
He test drove both a Suburu Impreza WRX and the STI, and it turns out we will prolly get the WRX instead, only cuz the STI is double the price on insurance AND the WRX has 240 hps which is more than enough. WRX is also about 10,000 cheaper.......
So Subaru wins..but a different version. I dont think its as nice looking as the BMW 1 or 3 series but I guess its more about being practical than how cute the car is.
Now lets hear your opinions on the WRX if you have any

He's from Kentucky...his only hockey knowledge comes from playing video games (and me). He's all about college basketball and the NFL.

Yikes... HUGE price range in the list above, and most are faster than a WRX.
A3- you have the option of getting quattro if you get the V6. Slower than a Rex though, and not a good value for the money.
S4 Avant- You're talking an $80,000 car that is much faster than a WRX and in a whole different class. Bad reliability, brutal on gas and expensive to maintain.
GTI- Comparable to a WRX. Front wheel drive, but nicer styling and interior.
Legacy GT- Faster than a WRX and more mature. Personally, this would be my pick if I was you.
V70R- Again, I think these are at least $70,000 and much faster than a WRX. They are great sleepers though. Crappy on maintenance like a German car.
BMW 540- These have been replaced by the 535. Again, $80,000, pretty comparable to the WRX performance wise.

You ever looked at the tinny doors on a Civic? I've driven both in the past, and the Civic was a cheaply made bugger. You get what you pay for.
Subaru has yet to find a competent styling department.

With the notable exception of the new Legacy

Well...no-one said that you had to buy new...and the 2004 and newer V70 Volvos are quite reliable...not like subie reliable but pretty decent...

Its not balls to the wall fast like the STI, but its far from slow. Very similar in terms of design, its more comparable to a normal WRX though.

I too would recommend the Mazda. I currently drive the Mazda3's predecessor (Protege5) and haven't had a single problem with it aside from worn out struts (bought used).
Not as flashy as a BMW or Subaru, but Mazda really does put out some quality products.
That said... if you want to go on a family vacation in it, I'd recommend getting a larger vehicle then any of the one's you've listed.

I can only suggest, you do, what my wife does, when she tries to change my mind about something. I'd get banned though if I told you.

I would take a look at the Lexus IS250 as well. Great car at the same price range as the WRX.
