Default Renting a Car

Hi guys

Going to Vegas in May..

I wanted to know where i would go if i wanted to rent a car here and drive down to vegas and drop off the car there.

Would i be allowed to do this?

Has anyone ever done this?

What would the cost be?
Thanks

I am pretty sure you can but expect a fee of about 800-1000 dollars for not bringing the vehicle back to Canada.

I used to work at Enterprise many moons ago, and IIRC we would flat out refuse those requests.

Canadian cars were not re-rented in the US...so the car would have to be returned to Canada by someone, usually by flying someone down there and driving it back...thus likely an enormous drop off fee if you do find a company that will do it for you.

What do you mean? Does U-haul pay someone to take a truck one way?

As for driving in Vegas, I did. There was nothing to it. The traffic is lighter than here.

You would loose soo much money driving down there and dropping off the car, it isn't worth it. It would probably be cheaper to fly both ways.
Plus you will be charged for all the miles, at what ever rate it is.

Besides, driving takes precious vegas time away from you.

it makes sense how your whole team would want to drive down together but then why fly back up? the one way ticket is going to be expensive, as is the gas, having a dropoff location in another country, and whatever other fees (ie parking). Makes more sense for you all to take a flight down together both directions, save some cash, and spend that extra money at the casinos

It depends on where you're driving. The Strip is horrible, the area around the Strip is pretty bad, but once you get out into the burbs, it's not too bad.

I see what the OP is thinking- with a pool tourney the league pays you X amount for return airfare, and if you choose you can take the cash and drive down; giving you extra Vegas money. Then return airfare will be 1/2 of the two way airfare.

Unfortunately leaving a rental car that far away will cost you so much that it won't be worth it. Plus leave the idea of a road trip being "fun" out of your mind; most people who long for a road trip are people who haven't been on one. The best part of any road trip is the being away from home. Fly both ways and be done with it.

The other factor; let's say there's 5 of you going. Driving will take a full extra day to get there- how much money are you losing by not being at work an extra day? And don't say "oh, I have vacation time." Because that means if you take an extra day that's another day off you lose; and always put a value on your own time.

Charter a bus, or rent a Van. Works great expecially if one member of your group can drive such a vehicle. You're gonna have to drive it back if you go the Van route.

We were thinking about doing the same kinda thing for our hockey team, cause the bus ride down there would be 1/2 the fun.. Cheaper for a group of 12 or 14 to charter a bus then fly, but for 5 people not sure if the numbers work out..

You might want to check if they even "let" you do this.

Though this may not apply to North America, I remember in the EU, Avis allowed me to pick up the car at any city and drop it off an any other city within the same country and they didn't even charge any 1-way rates. They however, stated that I cannot take the automobile to another country. I had originally planned to drive from Spain over to Italy, through France. I ended up having to drop the car off at Barcelona and taking a plane to Milan.

Also, some car rental places may charge you extra for travel into the states. I remember Budget asking me if I plan to take the car into the United States. If so there was a different rate.

It depends also where you rent it from.
If you rent a car in vancouver, they will let you drive it into Washington st at no extra charge.
Calgary to vegas is a whole other situation, and I am sure they would charge you an arm and a leg

Smuggle drugs...

Move someones furniture...

Border hop migrant workers...

Countless ways to make this an enterprising venture.
