I like using this site:

http://www.allmusic.com/

You can sort by almost any genre imaginable, listen to samples, and it tells you similar bands and side projects that the same artists are involved in. I have found so many bands through this site.

It's like Wikipedia for music. I can get sucked into surfing for hours just by clicking links.

I also get a lot through my Sirius radio.

I have a college radio show, and the station has a huge library of music I rip music from constantly. Unfortunately this means sifting through a lot of mediocre indie music to get to the good stuff.

Random electronic internet radio stations, and then I have Notepad open to quickly write down the song I 'm listening to that I enjoy. I keep a database of song names on my computer... then, go put them on my iTouch.

Also, look for spinoff projects by bands you currently like.

I use last.fm. I connect to various radio stations that are linked to my favorite artists, genres, and eras. It's an amazing service. I've used it for years.

bbc.co.uk/radio1/zanelowe

Listen to that everyday, Zane Lowe doesn't let me down. Hear a song I like, check out their myspace page and go from there.

This thread is interesting. I wonder if the music industry is paying attention? People really are getting their music in different ways.

I do check CP for downloading ideas as well.

When I'm not listening to ipod on bicycle etc.
I listen to radio through itunes.
80% radio paradise, 15% cbc3, 5% other.
I don't spend much time in a vehicle, but when I do I hook up my ipod through the $10 ipod charger/transmitter I got at Crappy Tire.
radio paradise really keeps me going though.

I forgot to add: podcasts. I subscribe to the genres I enjoy and I've discovered some great tunes.

I'm also going to add festivals to the list. Folk Fest and Sled Island were huge for me last year.

I just downloaded the entire SXSW showcasing artists compilation with one song from every artist. It's about 3GB big but it has a ton of stuff I've never heard of before.

Aside from that, I've found the amazon.com listmanias to be useful as well as metacritic.com. I normally just try to keep my ears open.

Honestly, just through friends.

I don't listen to any radio, websites, or musical podcasts. Probably not the best way to go about things but I still come across good new music all the time. I guess I surround myself with people who have similar tastes, make them do all the legwork and then leech off of them.
