I'd do go for plasma at that size.

where are you putting the tv? in the basement? in the living room with lots of windows?
if it's in a dark room, i would go for the plasma, if it's in a lighted room, room with overhead lights, room with windows.. i would go with the LCD>.. if you want another heater, i would go for plasma...
If you want to wait, I would wait until the OLED last longer. and get that.

x2 - Though I would say LCD makes some nice heat too. I have a 40 in my bedroom and I have to leave the window open a little bit (during the winter even) to keep the temp normal.
But I say don't wait for OLED. It will take a while for it to worth the buy. And when you keep waiting for the next best thing, you keep waiting

Kind of explains why i'm still on the sidelines waiting
Then again my tube TV still works and has great sound. Oh well maybe someday i'll accidently spill water down the back and short it out

To be honest, average Joe can't tell the difference, IMO. Just get whichever one you can get the best deal on at the time.
My only advice is to do some research on the internet and get a decent brand name. Everyone I know that purchased the cheaper "never heard of it before" brand has regretted it.

Get both!
Go see what you like...its like walking around Nascar asking if Chevy or Ford is better. Everyone has their own opinion on what they have had success with.

Plasma is near the end of it's technological life, Pioneer stopped making them.
That means they are pretty good now compared to the early ones. I'd get plasma. Way better black levels and contrast and color vibrance than LCD.
Get Plasma!

I was told that if you're getting anything 42" or smaller, go for LCD.

I had a 37 inch LCD and couldn't stand the motion blur when I was watching sports. I now have a 42 inch plasma and I absolutely love it. I bought the Panasonic Viera with anti-glare... it's in my well-lit living room and damn, is it sexy.

When you walk into best buy or futureshop and comparing the TVs, make sure the feed they are showing you on both TV is HD. sometime, depending on the month on what brand they want to push, they will have HD on that and SD on the ones beside it. so the brand they want to push will look better in comparison.

Cool, thanks thus far.
It's in a living room with a fair amount of light. That said I'll have decent blinds that close well.
There will be no direct sun as the Windows are slightly NW facing (more west).
I'm looking to spend around 1,000 - 1,800.
Also going to need to decide to go shaw/bell. Although not sure if I'm allowed a dish on my townhouse.
With that will come the whole 'pvr, hd, receiver' decision making process.
Also saw a Samsung rear projection LCD for $990 in the paper today. 55"
Those have gotten a lot smaller have they not?
What's the picture like in them?
Guess I'll do some store visits this weekend.

I read somewhere that Plasma is better for fast moving images and video games. Has anyone here heard or experienced this?

I've been looking for a TV after my last one went.
I had the same debate as you, 50", plasma or LCD.
Something always bugged me about LCDs. But, after I had a good long chat with a guy at London Drugs, I think plasma would be the way I would go, despite it is a dying technology. He pointed out little differences for me, and to me it has a picture I like better.
Anyways, my next tv will be a Panasonic plasma.

Alot of it will likely come down to personal preference
I have a Samsung 40" LCD myself and I love it. A bunch of my friends have gone out and bought samsung LCDs as well.
My roommate has a 50" Hitachi plasma, but I couldnt tell you how it looks since everything thats displayed on it is in Standard def. I could go hook up my ps3 to it and throw in a blue ray, but meh, that seems like too much work
also if you go to a big box store to check the tvs when comparing the images, on top of the source material, try to ensure that the TV settings are the same. An image the picture setting on Dynamic will look brighter than the same image on a movie setting

Keep in mind comparing a projection LCD to a regular LCD is like apples and oranges. That's just in picture quality; nevermind the size of the unit.

I have a Panasonic TH-42PZ77U, A 42" Panasonic Viera Plasma and I am really really happy with it. I did a ton of research and the Panasonic was easily the best bang for the buck. I bought my TV including 3 year warranty for $1600. Costco is now selling 42" Plasma Panasonics for $999.99 as well (The Costco at the end of Sarcee Trail North)
That being said, it comes down to personal preference. I would check out the Panasonic Plasmas though.
