In short order it sounds like. I don't think it will take long for 7 teams to tell them to get bent.

This is why I was extremely polite and diplomatic with them on the phone. She thanked me for understanding and said if any of the teams give her a hard time they will "accidently" get left out of the decision.

I agree but I think they may have been blindsided here by the city (at least that is their story right now) and aren't looking forward to 7 angry teams venting on them. I'm hoping we get lucky here and get picked but if not I'll join you guys in stringing them up.

The thing that sounds bogus to me is the odd number of teams. If it were 6 teams or 8 teams it'd make more sense that the city screwed them.

Yeah, my other league uses Optimist and we knew what was and wasn't available before our first meeting (first week Feb).
I doubt the city double booked two leagues!
They either were not sure how many returning teams would indeed return, and thus gambled (which is poor management); or this was a ploy to fill the other league.
A third option is that they cannot count.

First thing I thought of when you posted what happened was that it is a ploy to fill the other league. Really, really silly if true.

Is it 5 or 7 competing for two spots?

We should come up with a back-up plan:

1) how many are willing to play in NE league if that is our only choice? I supoose I would as a last resort - would that get us priority for Optimist next year?

2) are there spots in any other leagues - ex. Calgary Sports & Social Club, etc? Aeneas and Shawnski might know more about this.

3) Could the Optimist League hold an auction for the two spots? Whoever wants it the most can pay a premium.

4) Violence

5) Litigation

6) Bribery

7) Sex Scandal

You might talk to Big League about the JayCee diamonds for Sunday nights too.

Alternatively, I have one spot still open if necessary in our weeknight league. But that window closes really bloody fast as I have to finalize budgets, schedules, procurements and whatnot right now.

Oddly enough, just as this was unfolding here, I received word from a team that thought they were going to be able to join last minute but now can't put a full team together. I had given them until today to let me know. Strange coincidence, actually.

but in all seriousness, that is lame! If you guys decide to join that other league that appears (from reading this thread) to be affiliated with your current or ex-league, I would demand some kind of rebate. As many have mentioned, it seems to be a ploy to get teams to join that league.

Rebate? They'd better return in full, lest their windows have unfortunate encounters with softballs and bats. (I may be pushing 30, but I'm not above getting what's owed to me)
