Mikka Kiprusoff is the early season favorite for the Hart trophy with a sparkling 0.50 GAA. The suffocating defence of the Flames frustrated the high-flying Senators and Red Wings, while the bruising Calgarians have intimidated opponents away from the goal crease. The Flames rope-a-dope offence is a style of play that will be emulated by other teams in the league. CGY was able to defeat OTT with only 12 shots on goal. Tanguay and Yelle with the winner scored vs. OTT, while Moss provided all the offence CGY would need against DET.
GM troutman on the early season:
Hey, we're a good hockey team, quite honest. We're battling for the league lead - how much better can you realistically expect to do? You guys wonder why I don't deal with media very often -- it's because I say one negative thing and they blow it up while I say a whole bunch of positive things and they ignore it. So what's the point? There are no bad teams anymore. The playoffs don't start tomorrow. To be quite honest, regular season and playoffs are two completely different things. Take a poll during the season of who people think is the best team and compare it to which team actually wins the Cup. There's a big difference there.
Standings:
GP W L O/TL GF GA PTS
CGY 2 2 0 0 3 1 4
BUF 2 1 1 0 8 6 2
OTT 2 1 1 0 5 5 2

It has been a rough start to the season for the Wings. In the first game we fell victim to Mike Grier and Kyle McLaren on a breakaway of all things! Clearly not a thrilling debut!
Against Calgary we launched a lot of shots on Kipper, and Zetterberg nearly put one in for the early lead. David Moss of all players clearly kicked one in...and this stood up as the game winner!
On another note entirely...it is downright eerie how close that game comes to emulating the actual league! The results from the games seem so close to what takes place in reality. Its pretty cool!

Kicked one in? He shot from outside the blue line!

Lindy Ruff press conference.
"The officials were garbage tonight, bush league. The Sabres were not given enough powerplays. Heatley interferes with the goalie and gets a goal. How is that possible? You can fine me, I don't give a crap. It's a joke."
The Sabres look to rebound against the Ducks, and hand the Ducks a second straight loss.
Darcy Regier is happy to point out the exciting brand of hockey that the Sabres and Ottawa play, and is worried about the game-killing tactics used by the Flames.
"That's just not good hockey, they are not a good team. Clutching and grabbing by marginal players against skilled players is not what people pay to see."

"Absolutely not a trap," GM troutman snapped back at reporters. "Calgary will not ever employ anything called a trap. It might be a similar style, but it will never be called a trap.
"We call it a smart style of hockey against a very explosive team. Call it what you want. We won't call it a trap, we'll call it a press. I don't know what they are playing out East, but it's not hockey, quite honest. No hitting, no defence - more like ringette."
The "press" - one forechecker (sometimes none) and line up four players across the neutral zone.
The OTT - BUFF game really got out of hand, as both coaches embarassed the league:

Buffalo Sabres slash Ducks!
The Sabres are back in the win column with a resounding 5-3 victory in Anaheim. Briere and Hecht led the Sabres with 2 goals apiece, Drury with the other. Stafford and Zubrus had 2 assists each.
The Sabres outshot the Ducks 40-26, Giguere was outstanding in keeping the score respectable. Pronger scored on the PP, Moen a SH marker, and Getzlaf unassisted.
The Sabres managed to contain Selanne who managed a team high 7 shots but most from the outside.
Ducks coach was criticised roundly for playing Brad May on the top line with Getzlaf and Selanne. His scoring game was left in Buffalo many years ago.
The Sabres look forward to taking over first place in the league this weekend, while the Ducks are mired in the basement with an unlikely team, the Red Wings.

I'm going in for surgery Monday, so I'll be 2-3 weeks on the shelf.
I hope to make up for lost time after that, including possibly hosting a weekend Strat-O get together in the near future to make up. More details after the stitches heal.

I've got a question (haven't read much of the thread, forgive me if it's been asked), where can I get Strat-o-matic hockey? Just on Ebay? Are there any retailers in Calgary who sell it?
Thanks!

There is one copy left at Sentry Box (upstairs in the War Game room), with the 2006/07 players (minus the extra players that you have to order). $47.95. I'm not sure where else in Calgary you would find it.

If you are interested in joining our league, it is not too late.

I'm definitely interested in picking up the game (I frequent Sentry Box often but never saw it). Not sure if I've got the time or effort for the league... considering I was kicked out of the CPHL years ago for not putting in the time, I'm probably not a wise choice for a GM.
Thanks for the help Troutman.

Quite honest, I thought we played really well. It's a win on the road and two points against a high-scoring team.

Hey, you know what? It was one of those games. Hopefully, we got it out of our systems. To be quite honest, you want 5 out of 8 points (and we got 6) -- don't ask for much more. Anyone who asks for more really doesn't understand the whole concept. These teams are all so close.
OTT 4 @ VAN 0
The league is investigating a nasty incident that saw Jan Bulis get a 5 minute major penalty.

“To be quite honest, we expect Kipper to be a major contributor to the success of our organization for years to come,” Flames general manager troutman said.
“You don’t get paid for past performances,” troutman said. “He is going into his prime in the next three or four years, [and] I don’t see anyone who is going to replace him in that time.”

Our test season could continue in September, and wrap-up with some kind of playoff.
The new player cards are available now for $40.25 (includes additional players).
I think we will be looking for 8 serious GMs to run teams for this season (this means being available 1-2 evenings per month).
I assume the following will back - Aeneas, cyclone, Slava, B.R. and myself. Interested GMs should PM me or respond to this thread.
We have to decide on how to pick teams - do we start from scratch, or let existing GMs have a better chance at keeping their old teams?
2007-2008 card set:
