I'm moving to Ft. McMurray
Just found out that I'm being moved on a temporary, but full-time basis starting Saturday. Any CPers residing up there? Where's a good bar to watch the Flames..hopefully in the playoffs? Any other words of wisdom or anecdotes?

I have a job, but there's this rumour going around that if you work in Ft. Mac, you get paid a hell of a lot more than if you did the same job in Calgary.
Are you getting a raise at least?

Housing costs will eat up any raise he might get. I suspect he'll be asking you for $5

Things in Fort McMurray also cost a hell of a lot more than they do in Calgary.
Condolences to you Fregitude. I was fortunate that my family left there when I was like 3. Have you been there before....if not....well see if you can avoid going there in the first place!

My girlfriend had to go up there for a meeting and had to stay over night. Her company told her not to go out after dark alone.
Lovely place it sounds like.

From what i hear, it's worse than Fort St. John, and I hate that town.
Watch out for golddiggers.

I grew up right next to McMurray, small town on the Saskatchewan side and made trips over there maybe once a year around 1990. It wasn't so bad then but now it's a horrible place to visit and I can imagine a much worse place to live.
On my flight out of there last year I struck up a conversation with a young lady from Vancouver who was in McMurray for 3 weeks for work. She was terrified by the place and so happy to get out, she couldn't even go out to any of the bars for a drink. Constantly harrassed, guys trying to pick her up, etc.
The apartment buildings over there are crammed full, the parking lots are overflowing with trucks parked in ditches. Everyone else lives in mobile homes, which charge an arm and a leg for the lot rental.

LOL! Don't go out after dark? Crazy.
Lived there for 14 years, but I can't be of much help as I moved away almost 13 years ago. It's the end of the earth, but I guess you can make some $$$ there. The infrastructure is brutal, the traffic sucks and everything is expensive. Hope your company provides housing or at least a subsidy of some sort.

The "don't go out after dark" stuff is a bit of BS. I suppose just like any town it depends where exactly you are (and there's plenty of places in Calgary that I'm uncomfortable alone and after dark), but I go up there for work all the time and it's really not that bad. It's not somewhere I'd like to live forever though, for sure.

Haha, this thread turned nasty quick.
One of my good friends was on a RCMP placement up there for a few months and said the town's theme song should be "Saturday night's alright for fighting".
Young transient males + $$$ + testosterone = bad news

There have been numerous cases of women being accosted and even a few assault cases up there.
Hardly a "bit of BS" when the town is 95% male.

Ah yeah Haber, forgot you lived up there. I remember trading McMurray stories on the way back from the Heckle.
The traffic. I was on another trip up there for work last year, stayed at the Sawridge which is as close to the airport as you can be. Gave myself 45 mins to catch my flight but the problem was I could not make the left turn against traffic coming into town. Steady stream, no openings at all, it was beyond ridiculous. I waited alomst 10 mins then headed the opposite direction toward town to turn around.
The airport was gong show, missed my flight. Air Canada were a-holes, WestJet were great and got me on a flight to Calgary asap.
They have since installed traffic lights at the intersection.
Oh yeah, worse customer service all over town I have ever encountered. Horrid. Everyone has a chip on their shoulders and feel they should be in the oil sands making huge money and not helping you.
