I could listen to Radiohead all day everyday. They are sooo good. Seriously unbeviablably good. I sometimes wonder why god would grace me with such a presence as Radiohead. I actually do, I'm not kidding. For me, they are everything and anything I've ever asked of music. I always thought music was something you digest and move on to, until I met Radiohead. If "Let Down" and "Reckoner" were the only two songs Radiohead had ever released I'd still call them the greatest band in the world and would take those two songs over the entire collective of music ever produced. Seriously.
They aren't whiny, just incredibly smart.
EDIT: I'm literally in love with Radiohead. So when you say they are crap, I have to look at you funny.

AC/DC
The Rolling Stones (I like one or two of their songs)
U2
And they aren't famous by ANY stretch of the imagination (although hearing my brother talk about them, he makes it sound like they are 100x more famous than the Beatles), there's a band he listens to called the Locust, or any "band" that has a guy named Justin Pearson in it. I put quotation marks around the word "band" because they have about as much musical talent and a sense of what sounds good and what doesn't as a three year old banging on his mom's pots on the kitchen floor. The only difference is is that the three year old's final product sounds MUCH, MUCH better.
Seriously. Download one of their songs, and give it a listen for as long as you can. It's F'N BRUTAL. I've never heard worse music in my entire life, and I really do mean that. And my brother just CRANKS it on his stereo all day long.
I think they made that music to help soothe terminally ill hospital patients. It would probably make the whole dying process much more harsh (and harder on the ears), but I'm sure they'd take comfort knowing that they won't have to hear that crap anymore once they're dead.
Here's their Myspace, if you're brave enough, or just want to put yourself in a bad mood for whatever reason:

Now that you've found it, it's gone. Now that you feel it, you don't. You've gone off the rails...

Now now, let's not get overboard. Let down is okay, not great by any means, but just okay to listen to. But Reckoner is exactly what other people said Radiohead is - whiney and unbearable. Ooooh oh oooh oh...

Personal experience man. I've listened to both so many times it's hard to count. Let Down listen count on iTunes is 488 for me. I told you I was being literal. I love the song to death. How is Reckoner at all whiney and unbearable? The drumming is unbelievably good, Yorke's voice transcends reality....recccccccccokkkkkkkkkkkennnnnnnnnnnnnne rrrrrrrrrrr....

Sure, you can take a track from a great album and it works on the radio, but that doesn't mean that is how the music should be listened to.
Maybe that is the divide between the casual, top-40 loving music fan, and the music snobs? I hear people say all the time "Oh, I don't want to spend $20 on an album that has only one or two songs I like on it." None of the music snob people I know ever say that, because the music they are in to is about albums, not hit songs.
|
I know I am tired, but off the top of my head, I can't think of any really good "albums" since CDs were introduced. And the disdain shown for AC/DC here will probably invalidate my reply that I think Back In Black was a great "album". Haven't heard its peer since.
As it is with each generation, and down to each individual, something just clicks. Some "album" does it for them for some reason. Some are more capable of enduring the filler than others who prefer the meat. C'est la vie. Call yourself snobs or whatnot. Doesn't bother me. In my perspective, the songs make the album, not the other way around. One of my favourite albums was actually a soundtrack, from Heavy Metal. Some great songs that worked well from one to another. One Shania Twain album comes to mind as being quite good as a whole as well. Mutt Lange (of AC/DC fame) produced.... hmmm... always thought that was an odd paring.
And for the record in this thread, I have never really been a fan of:
Pink Floyd
Led Zepplin
Rush
although I can appreciate some of their works.
The White Stripes? Puhhhhleaaaase. Kill them. Kill them now.
As for Radiohead, go listen to Weird Al's "One More Minute". Pretty much sums up what I would prefer to do than listen to them.

How can you possibly defend Dylan's songwriting (which i can agree is legendary even though I'm not a HUGE fan) but say you can't stand Clapton.
what is about him you can't stand? if you say his guitar playing then you are a piece of moldy bread on a month old sandwich.
see what I did there?

When I listen to music I try to find substance which Eric Clapton has little of..again this is all about opinion like you said.

Me too.
I agree...I have listened to Radiohead and find it is pure unadulterated junk.
At least in my opinion anyhow.

What about those people who keep the tickets and have the t-shirts from every concert they've ever gone to? Wouldn't that be like keeping all the used condoms from your various sexual encounters around?

people like music for different reasons.
I listen to Iron Maiden not because i think some of their songs are good, but as a guitar player i enjoy the style of their 3 man assault.

How has Kiss gone Undetected so far? Hate KISS. Hate them. Horrible, stupid, bland sound with ridiculous theatrics (to camouflage horrible sound).
Hmm...who else?
Can't stand Bob Dylan. It's his voice.
There's a bunch of "popular" stuff these days that makes me want to put cotton balls in my ears. Blink 182, My Chemical Romance, Sum 41...

I don't think anyone would considr them great, that's why.
My first ever concert was 23 years ago. It was Kiss. And it was terrible. Worst sound ever. I couldn't tell you what songs they played as it was too distorted.

Honestly
You don't go to kiss concerts for the music, you go for the noise, the explosions, the hot chicks in tight black leather and the stage show.
