Default Maui

Waking up to snow this morning got me thinking about a trip to Hawaii. I was planning on taking the family there around spring break next year. The WEST JET seat sales should help the pocket book and the dollar is the only reason I'm planning it again. Now, does anyone have any good accomodation recommendations?
Family of four 2 young kids under 8.

I have been to Napili, but that was over 20 years ago now and I need some tips for a nice spot.

Redforever, The Kamaole sands looks ideal. One question though. I didn't see a pool on the website. Is there a pool? I'm not sure how much ocean swimming my 4 year old can handle.

Thanks Browna, I'll source that out looks promising.

I'll have a good look on the web with nothing else to do today. Thank gawd we have an afternoon game scheduled in 30 mins.

You could stay in the Kaanapali area.

It's close to Lahaina and there is a great Olympic pool that is free, also has wading pool for kids and is usually dead quiet.

I think there is also one in the area you're looking but I've never found it since we don't stay over there.

And thanks a lot - now I'm longing for a maui trip and it's making me sad. jerk.

Yes there is a pool. And your 4 year old can handle the beach just fine. There might be some days when they get trade winds and the water is more for boogey boards, but the beach is big and wide, usually has calm spots.

We stayed twice at the Kamaole Sands when our kiddies were little. And if you go over Easter, they have egg hunts etc all arranged for the kiddies too. The grounds are big, around 14 acres, very well kept. The suites will vary since they are individually owned so it will depend on who owns them and how much upkeep they have had.

There is not a restaurant on site though, but lots of cheap eats just a bit north of the Kamaole Sands, in the old part of Kihei. The grounds do have barbecues though, so you can buy food and barbecue on site.

If you go to vrbo.com as someone else suggested, and go to Hawaii, then Maui, then Kihei, I am sure you can find some units from the Kamaole Sands that owners are renting privately. And then you will be able to see the actual suite you are renting, usually a bit cheaper than going through a middle man too.

Kamaole Sands is beautiful. We went there when I was 8 and my younger sister 5.

Great location on the island as well. Only criticism I'd have is the road between the hotel and the beach, but there's a cross walk and it's not really a big deal. Ground floor units are mucho deseable.

Agreed also on what was said about the beach itself. The waves there are not as big as most places in Hawaii.

Make sure you check out Cheeseburger in Paradise in Lahaina!

There are very very few properties in the Kihei area where the road is not between the hotel and the beach. You will be hard pressed in that area to find condos or hotels that are right on the beach.

True. The only one that comes to mind is the Four Seasons...And you're a real sucker if you pay that much for a hotel!

The road isn't at all a big deal, I just felt like I should say something bad about the place to remove any bias...That's all I could even think of.

The poolside restaurant there made a mean French Toast, be sure to order one for me.

I did the Google Earth thing of Kehei and it does appear that the road between the beach and the resort in most cases except the 4 seasons. Prices there are whack. $500 a night for a single room.
I'll keep searching but I am thinking this might be a winner.

There is one property, private condos, right on the beach, a bit further north of the Kamaole Sands location. We stayed with friends there, for the life of me, can not remember the name now. Don't know what the price of the condos are either. Our friends owned the condo and we stayed with them for free.

It has a gorgeous beach, but there is no landscaping etc like at Kamaole Sands. Basically, it is just a property that happens to be right on the beach.

The road is not a problem. Everyone just takes their beach chair or beach mat and heads off to the Park. There is a series of 3 parks. Starting from the north is Kamaole Beach Park I, then II, then III. All are public. I can not speak for the first two, but at the third one, there are groomed areas where you can play games, barbecue and the like, bathrooms, showers, etc.

Ok, put on my thinking cap and I think the property that is right on the beach is the Royal Mauian. I think it is on Kamaole Beach Park II. The pics on the following sites seem to confirm that for me. Personally, I would go with the Kamaole Sands with young children, just nicer grounds, not as expensive, beach etc is nicer too.

You can go up to the Royal Mauian and use the beach there if you so desire anyhow. The beach there is public.

If money isn't an issue:

I liked the Four Season (next to the Grand) better, but, the young ones would love the pool at the Grand.

Otherwise, my next choice would be to stay in the Kaanapali area.

For those of you interested here are the rates. And as the saying goes,
"If you have to ask you can't afford it!" definitely applies here.

I have a little trickle down of the oil money but not that much.

Off Season one bedroom starting at $1900 per evening and ranging up to $16000.00 per night for the three bedroom deluxe. Plus a $25 room fee.

I was good until I saw that $25 charge. I hate being nickle and dimed to death.

I have gone twice and stayed at the Royal Kahana both times - great location, pretty close to Lahaina, right next to Ka'anapali, Kapalua golf course, nice location RIGHT on the beach, reasonable rates. I'd check it out if I were you.

I second the Sugar Beach Resort. So secluded and beautiful. Our condo was beautiful and oceanfront.
