Granted, only saw them once, but there was really no point in seeing them live. They sounded essentially the same as on their albums (all the albums have been force-fed on me, although I just tend to tune it out pretty fast), and there's nothing to see visually, as the band just stands there, doing nothing. (The singers pretentious pose started to get irritating. Yeah, I get it, you think you're an artist. Even Trent Reznor created more contact with the audience, and he's not exactly mr. social.) The videos looked kinda cool for the first five minutes, but then I really started to get annoyed by how much of the background stuff is just pure filler, and not even quality filler, just low-grade fractals and so on. I got the same stuff on my WinAmp plugins. Everything worth seeing I've seen on their actual music videos. Eventually I just walked away and catched the later half of the Bellrays. They were nice in comparison, quite lively, although really they're just kind of a polished version of the better pub bands out there, which is not a compliment.
I never got this comparison, except historically. The Beatles went much further and are much more varied, had some really good lyrics (gotta love McCartneys twisted humour) and even rocked real nice at the start of their career, where the Beach Boys never created much anything than really well-produced pop, something which is historically an achievement but irrelevant for on a modern listener. Where's their Helter Skelter? Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite? Happiness is a Warm Gun? Pet Sounds is very propably the most overrated album ever.
Okay okay, I mean the crazy tried to sing in Finnish and everything

Beatles >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Beach Boys
Beach Boys have Pet Sounds which is pretty good, but in comparison to Sgt Peppers, it blows hard...

U2 ... amazing that Bono always seems to be doing charitable stuff right around album releases ...
Tragically Hip ... strike me as one of those mediocre things Canadians insist is awesome solely because well ... it's Canadian.

Hardly. Sure, musically they were... limited. But historically speaking, they were massive. Of course, being historically significant doesn't actually make the music better, but badly over-rated, I wouldn't say that. Besides, Morrison at his best is one of the greatest vocalists ever. If you don't get that, just try listening to Doors post-Morrison. I recommend keeping painkillers handy. That man quite literally turned crap into gold, and his performance on Back Door Man holds up in comparison with the classic blues howlers.

Not really a good example from the mans catalogue. You should never judge an artist by his or her hits, they're usually either the only good songs they have or the most irritating ones.
... saying that makes me feel like the biggest snob

Vocalist, I guess you could build a case for that, but songwriter? Hardly. Also, personally, I think longevity is vastly overrated.

U2, although I think War and Boy are good.
Bruce Springsteen...simply don't get it at all.
The Doors-not a big fan.
Steve Miller Band-How did I ever like this?
I could list 50 others but I don't think they are considered great in the grand scheme.

I remember getting that "Young Hearts" greatest hits CD a few birthdays back and then absolutely loathing Steve Miller Band ever since. Just awful.

So much hatred... not enough time to name every band I hate...
Pretty much everything pre-Nirvana and I hate it. I hate it all (with very limited exceptions).
But as for bands I despise...
AC/DC
Pink Floyd
The Doors
The Who
Rush
Rolling Stones (with the exception of 2 songs, Give me Shelter and Paint it Black - I want to stab the person who wrote that horrid song Brown Sugar).
Van Halen

Isn't this mostly a list of bands who, by the fact they've put out a bunch of albums, many people feel there is "nothing new" or "all their stuff sounds the same"? Isn't that sort of what a band typically does over the course of their career, turn out music that typically sounds the same or has the same roots?
What we seem to have above is more a list of "here's a band I think is overplayed and as a result I have grown tired of them to the point I hate them or I have never been able to stand them."
I think you could pretty much add any great band or artist to this list and you'd have a valid argument. Some would vehemently argue against you, but that's just the way it works. For example I take exception to the Rush comments. To me they write some of the best lyrics, the three members are all highly touted musically, and over 30+ years have changed and evolved much more so than a band like The Stones. But, I do understand they are pretty much a "binary band" - people either love them or hate them, not much in between.
I'd say some bands get hyped because people think it's cool to list them as influences. I've never understood what Nirvana did that was so awesome, or Green Day. I like both, have no issue with the music, I just don't think it should be called amazing. I have never understood the fascination with Radiohead, and think I need someone to explain them to me.
It's interesting reading through the list there is so far no mention of The Grateful Dead, BTO, The Guess Who, or Supertramp. I would think all of those would qualify for someone...perhaps they aren't played enough.

Can't I just hate Geddy Lee because of his god damned voice? Same reason I hate Coheed and Cambria.

I remember a friend and I were speaking about music one day and I thought of this... My friend really got upset with me.
There isnt a single canadian band that I truly like. I mean I like a few songs here and there, but I'm not a fan overall..
He went on continuously listing canadian bands, and it simply solidified the point.
It isnt that they are canadian or anything, it was just a random thought, and for some reason stuck with me. odd.

I died a little bit inside reading that. Love the band, recognize that they are essentially a cover band. But damn, that hurts.

Coldplay, White Stripes, John Meyer, Jack Johnson, Keane, Arctic Monkeys...the list is endless.
I think that those "fans" irritate me so much more than actual bands. The hip crowd falls in love with "the best stuff out there" shoves it down your throat and soon moves onto another band. Rinse and repeat.

Somebody put on a C&C album a little while ago for me. I was digging it until he started singing. Jesus christ.
