Default Best LOCAL Bands

Hey everyone.

I guess I'll start by explaining that one of my sources of income is doing sound engineering at a local live music venue, and currently I am in a situation where I am going to see about 40 young, local bands by the time Stampede week hits.

I had NO IDEA about what a WEALTH OF TALENT this city has.

Aside from gig nights, we are currently doing a promotion with Big Rock and 92.9fm called "The Original Music Showcase" in which bands perform their original sets for an hour to a panel of judges (as well as a crazy packed house). The winner will get gear money, a record contract, and radio play!

While all the bands have been outstanding, the best band so far in the contest by leaps and bounds has been "The Council" (formerly Jay Burns and the Council). They're usually a cover band, but I don't understand why? Their originals kick serious ass, as well as their stage show. All of them are very accomplished players, and they're all young!

Lots of other bands to check out include:

- Downtown Prophets (punk)
- In For Life (rock)
- Monstrus In Animo (metal....kind of like SYL with a female vocalist)
- Tree Burning (metal)
- Flashmob (rock/house...I don't know...kind of reminded me a little of the Killers without being so...gay...)
- End of Compromise
- Johnny and the Band
.......

Actually, I need to stop there because I just realized how rediculous this list could get.

SO.........

How about some other wicked live local acts (no cover bands allowed!) that the membership here on CP might enjoy/play in?

The A Team is one of my favorites - Rap/rock

Im not sure if they are local, but The Cripple Creek Faeries are very good and play calgary a bunch - Rock

And I know these guys are out of Vancouver but also really good - Whitey Houston - Similar to the white stripes, a drummer and guitarist, plus a hot chick with maracas.

The Ostrich is a solid rock band as well

The Brenda Vaqueros are a interesting band as well, sort of a rock/country/somethingish band. Very good at what they do.

The Dudes. Are they still around? Have they bowed to the fame?

BEJIA FLOR!!! Worth a listen. If you don't get them, listen for another minute. They are outstanding. They often perform with Jane Vain and the Dark Matter.

Check out "The Birds".

My Son just won a battle of the bands this past weekend in Okotoks (MCC).
First prise was a trip to a recording studio in Calgary, to cut a disk. Needless to
say, I think there band, "Blackjack", is the best band in the Calgary area.

If Josh is the engineer for the session then they are in great hands. He is a great engineer and hands down the FINEST protools operator I have ever worked with.

Congrats to your son! I can tell you're a very proud father!
