Piers are overrated most of the time. The one in Seattle is gorgeous but filthy and you have street people crawling all over the place harassing you for change and the Interstate is roaring over your head and you have the seagulls crapping everywhere.

Really? I've been to the piers in Seattle, San Francisco, Sydney, Auckland, Singapore.... there's a ton of positive things happening on piers for people to see and do. I think you've just had bad experiences on them, for whatever reason.

I'm not sure I even know what culture means. If you don't like the city, then fine, If I wasn't in O&G I may not either, but if you think calgary sucks because the downtown area is dead at night .... man, wait till ya get a load of downtown Phoenix.
But I am only a sports fan I guess Culture vs Things to do are not one in the same, and AGAIN (can't you people read?) I never mentioned Phoenix being a cultural hotspot and that's not really a reason why i'm moving, but I can't wait to watch so much live sports MLB to me is HUGE, the atmosphere at a ball game in the evening cannot be beat and just to have New things to do, new roads to drive, new shopping malls, different people, new landscape ect.

I'm just personally at a point in my life where I need to experience and live in a new city. But that's just me.

The point still remains, that while you think there is nothing to do in Calgary, doesn't mean that there actually is.

let him move, the only way someone will see that Calgary isnt all that bad, is when they find out most other places in the world have the same issues only on a much bigger scale...

In theory, true. But there's lots of other experiences that can be had in other countries and cities that you couldn't get here in Calgary. Don't be so quick to judge that bigger cities mean badder.

I took it as you implying that bigger cities are worse off because they're more problems.

Anyways, you don't move away from Calgary and not expect a cultural change. That's the benefit of moving away; it's different, and some people prefer a different location to live. There are plenty..PLENTY of places that have just as high quality living as Calgary.

Geez Louise, the guy is just moving to Phoenix. He's not going to burn Calgary down on his way out of town, but some people seem to take it as a personal affront that someone would dare move away.

As for Calgary and nothing to do... well that's not really true, but some of the suggestions that always come up here (Devonian Gardens, Calaway Park, Lougheed House...) that's great and all, if you are a kid or an old woman. None of that stuff can be considered "something to do" for the CP demographic on a Saturday night.

Exactly. Most of it is fluffly tourist stuff, but then you go out and make it for what it's worth. For example, renting a bike and taking it through Fish Creek Park and beyond is an excellent way to 'create' entertainment value for yourself. Someone can be entertained in this city if they're will to use a little elbow grease.

Then just take all the lame examples of things to do and add "...on mushrooms" to the end of them.

If I can speak for the over 30 and married with children demographic at CP, night life is pretty much irrelevant for us. A big city would be exciting while you are young and free, after that, not so much.

For your interests you might have stuff to do, don't you play in a band or something? So naturally there's alot you can be doing.

For me, Going to sporting events is the best thing to do in any city, I cancelled my season tickets because I just didn't have to steam to enjoy going to the dome anymore.. (and I need the money)

Phoenix probably won't be my home forever, but for at least a year i'll experience something new, I could NEVER live in Calgary my entire life.. I'm not saying anyone else needs to feel the same way, but it's the way I feel about this town.

Nothing wrong with having an opinion is there? Why must everything be absolutely cut and dry?

Everything I like to do in Calgary, I've done, done again, then done again to death.

My opinion does not = Fact, it's just how I feel mang.

So what? At least it'll all be new to me.. that's the kicker.

Plus, driving down a freeway in shorts and a t-shirt in November heavily outweighs driving up bow trail after work after a nice snow... gotta love all the dirty cars, gravel and overall bleek-ness... Oh it's a Chinook? How exciting! a Nice warm 5 degrees and windy as hell! Joy!!

I'm at an age where I can make a change with absolutely no consequences, if Phoenix sucks.. so be it, but I guarantee you I Highly doubt I'd even look in Calgary's direction if I were to move anywhere else...

I'm not trying to convince any of you that Calgary sucks... if you think it fits you, and what you like to do.. and are content with everything here. Good on you..

24 years is enough for me. Anyway, i'm exhausted with this topic and on a board where the majority of people live in Calgary my opinion obviously isn't a popular one, but I'm not afraid to say it's not all rainbows and lollypops in Calgary.

I lived in Calgary for 19 years and then moved away (first to Edmonton... shudder). There's lots to do in Calgary, but Im with you - no time like being 24 to stretch out and find a new place to live. Who knows, the grass might not be greener in Phoenix (well, rather the concrete, but I digress) and you might return to Calgary or go somewhere else. Good on you for trying at least.

Are you an American citizen or are you heading down on a work visa/work transfer visa?

its not your opinion, its your delivery.
having said, i would encourage anyone at your age...to live life somewhere else...it has happened to alot of my buddies, right around the 25 year mark...and even though they blamed everything on the Calgary, we all knew it was more than just that.

anyways hopefully you find a place with air conditioning and can afford the energy bills.
