At 21kUSD you are paying too much.. as a dealer i can buy them at the auction in the US for $17,000 with $43k. Even at the Canadian auctions they are being bought around $20k.. so if you are landed back here at $28 you are not in a money making position.. imho

As a somewhat compareable.. I have a 2004 XC70 with 95k on it that we are selling retail for $22.9

Well I've done gone and bought meself cash-upfront a 2008 Honda Civic Hybrid (despite your reservations). I figure what with the government rebate and anticipated gas savings over the life of the vehicle (I hold on to cars a long time) I'm at least even-steven or even maybe more ahead over a regular Civic. Primarily my needs are a commuter car in a lot of stop-and-go traffic, 15 kilometres to and from work.

Test-drove the Element and came close to buying it, but in the end, doesn't meet my needs. That's what it came down to.

I'm going to hang onto the '97 RAV4, but downgraded the insurance to personal use (hauling dogs and weekend groceries). Insurance stays about the same.

I think I did well. What the heck. I'm not a big eco-freak nor am I the most frugal guy. Just seemed like the sensible choice as a consumer.

I don't get the actual vehicle until Wednesday, but I tested a 2007 they (Hondawest) had on the lot.

The price difference was within the range I was looking at spending seeing as I could have have gone higher or lower. Going cash upfront I'm not sure how it works out with financing. Just figured I will eventually recoup the price difference in short order and saving myself from visiting the gas pump more than once a month.

Just figured the trade-off between cost, upkeep (got the extended warranty) basic needs (past the point of trying to impress) I'm going to do okay with the purchase. I figure its not going to be the zippiest and I can reconcile with that. Maybe I'm doing my part for the environment, but I just feel that maybe I've just made a regular purchase. Time will tell. I had been thinking Element or CR-V, this was just a sideways move. I would not have cosidered a regular Civic.

My only advice is to consider need vs. want, and then veer off into options in that price range.

Thought I would contribute something to this thread. Two weeks ago I went down to Great Falls for a night to poke around some of the car dealerships. Everything is there....Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Subaru & all of the domestics. I will say for the most part I was unimpressed with most of the "deals". Unless you are buying high end stuff you really aren't saving that much cash, at least with pre-owned. If you choose to buy new all of the dealers are quick to tell you that your warranty will be void in Canada but they will happily sell you one for anywhere between $2500-$4000.
With the way interest rates are in Canada right now (Honda & Nissan anyway) I don't think I will be purchasing in the States. Worst part of the story is that I hit black ice and wrecked my Pathfinder on the way back. That vehicle was a curse.

Actually some warranties are indeed transferrable. Of the ones you mentioned:

Subaru - US Warranty is valid, but you have to pay the Canadian dealer for warranty work and the reclaim form the US. Refunds will only be at set US rates for that job, and as Canadian Subaru dealers charge more for shop work, you could be out of pocket a tad. *See notes*. Subaru Added Security Extended Warranty honoured in Canada after basic 3 year expirs, with direct payment (ie don't need to pay and get reimbursed)

Toyota: - Yes, and extended warranty also transfers. www.toyotawarrantyinfo.com has some significant savings over buying it at the dealer.

Was there a Toyota dealer there willing to sell a new vehicle to Canadians? That's the hitch - warrantly is transferrable but Toyota USA has forbid their dealers from selling to Canadians under a big threat.

Honda would not, Nissan would and unfortunately Toyota was closed (it was a Sunday). So I am not sure. The guy at the border said they do 200 cars a week. All of the dealers are very familiar with the process and say they handle pretty much everything. Including daytime runners for those that need it.

Yup, with just about all new cars, the "daytime running lights" option is just switched on by the dealer through the computer. Don't let them charge you more than 15 minutes of labour for it...

I would say as a trade it is worth somewhere in the 7000-8000 range. Not too many of them showing up in the auction sheets to give you a great idea.

I sold an 87 300E for $2,500 to a guy that was a great car. I actually had bought it as a third car and my sister drove it for school for a while.. I have sold $100k cars that didn't work as good as that one.

Hey TimSJ!

I have a 2003 Saturn VUE (98,000km), that the dealership is putting a new transmission in under warranty. The transmission in that vehicle is suspect at best so while it's in the shop I'm considering trading it in and picking up something else. Now, my question is, would it be better to take the black book value and negotiate a purchase of a vehicle from there, or sell it privately then try to negotiate a deal. Is "combining" the deals gonna make it more attractive for me or the dealer?

It's a 2003, AWD, 4cyl, VTI. Autmatic, Sunroof, power stuff, alum rims... kinda things..
