Demand for oil is already at the highest it's ever been, especially with a certain 900 pound gorilla a few miles south of us sucking up 30% of the world's supply all by itself. I'm sure they'd LOVE to be able to ween themselves off of dependence on certain enemies. Now that Saskatchewan has got the Conservatives in, I'll suspect things to change.
But, that's Saskatchewan. This is about Alberta.

Yeah, I knew it would be, though Carol Haley always won with about 60-70% of the vote as well. Art Johnston looks to be doing the same. 72% of the vote so far.
Paul Hinman trailing in Cardston. If he loses, this election would be a complete disaster for the Alliance.

Oops hit reply too soon, forgot to add that while conventional oil production has been going down, non-conventional keeps going up and will continue to do so, which means the oil-sands are going to keep increasing in demand.

How could one argue that housing prices and economic growth will continue to rise? If you really believe that the world demand for oil cannot grow anymore, then wouldn't it be a silly decision to invest in real estate in an oil-dominated economy like the one we have here in Calgary? If John McCain is elected president of the USA, it'll be bomb bomb Iran, and oil prices could easily rise 50%.

I never once elluded to oil reaching it's peak, did I? I really don't want to turn this thread into an argument about Saskatchewan sitting on the fence with their oil reserves, though. I was simply stating that because of the NDP, they've had to wait until right now to get involved in the oil boom.

If oil prices go down, it can only be bad for Alberta's one-dimensional economy. Kevin Taft may not have a great personality, but he gave a speech last week in which he stressed the need for us to diversify our economy, invest our surplus in sustainable public work projects and curb our spending. Right now, the only reason things are so good is because the difference between the provincial government's spending and intake is made up by the huge amount of money they receive via royalty payments. Once, as you say, the world economy starts to head into deep recession (which I believe it already has), it would make sense to argue that world oil demand will fall, yes? The less demand, the lower the price is, and hence the lower amount of cash government has to throw around. The incredible lack of foresight shown tonight by the common Albertan astounds me. They have learned nothing from the previous oil boom and bust cycles. Do people actually think that things are going to be roses and ice cream forever? Give your head a shake - we're at the top of Mount Everest right now - the only way is down.
