Yeah, it's counted separately from the spoiled ballots and it is much more effective as a real protest vote.

Yeah, declined ballots actually show you as a real "protester." If you don't show up, you could just be a fat slob who's too lazy/dumb to go spend 10 minutes at a polling station.

Staying home only sends a message to the governing party that what they are doing is good enough as people aren't pissed off enough to come out and vote.
People, why are our solidars in Afghanistan if you don't want to get off your arse and take a few minutes to vote. People spend more time in the Tim Hortons drive through than it takes to cast a vote.
I don't get it.

As long as it does, I have never heard of them reporting this statistic.

So to sum up, I should just go decline it and not write a witty limerick on my ballot or something.

Ballots are black. Anything you write will not be visible.
In order for it to be tallied as a rejected or declined ballot, you must express that to the EA officer who hands you the ballot.
Marking an X on more than one will spoil it and it is not considered "declined".

A few years ago, 20% of people declined their elected-senate ballots. It gets reported every election. Just more people need to do it.

so how many "declined" ballots were there in the last election, or any election for that matter. This will not be reported tonight during the election newscasts. Nobody cares

They do get reported. Usually not a huge number.
Here are results from Calgary North Hill, 2004

They are there to bring International human rights and a democratic process to the country, yet people in the west don't give a sh*t about such an important freedom. It makes me sick.

Just because Global doesn't have a camera crew at the Communist Party HQ doesn't mean nobody voted for them. It also has to be news worthy. Also, because nobody did a news report that my car got stolen last year doesn't mean it didn't happen.
I didn't know about declining before. Good to know that's an option. Sends a different message than the 44% voter turnout if more people did that.

I guess if enough people did reject there ballot it would be reported. The one question I have is there a difference between spoiled ballots and rejected votes (the voter did not want to vote for any party) because if there isn't then really, we dont know how many were due to not voting for a party and ######s not knowing how to mark the ballot but wanted to vote.

True enough. The numbers are usually so small they do not warrant news coverage.

which is really my point. If a voter is doing it to protest, but nobody hears you, then what was the point?

personally, i will always vote. Voted in two federal elections even though i worked overseas. Nevertheless, it is a citizens right to vote as well as not to vote
I think voter apathy will be reported tonight, (wouldn't surprise me if it is one of the top stories) and does send a message. Spoiled/declined/eaten ballots won't get a wink

I don't know if I agree with the second part. Of course, like you I will always vote. I do so because I don't deserve it. Because 2 generations along with others fought wars to preserve the democratic way of life. I owe so much to those before me that I will always do my part to remember their sacrifice by using my ballot.
Should other citizens have the right "not to vote?" Hmmm, probably, but it speaks to the definite lack of intellectual apathy among our citizenry who decide to stay on the couch instead of go down the road to the polling station. This compared to even 20 years ago.
