GRBs are a special type of supernova. When a very massive star explodes, the inner core collapses, forming a black hole, while the outer layers explode outwards. Due to a complex and fierce collusion of forces in the core, two beams of raw fury can erupt out of the star, mind-numbing in their power. Composed mostly of high-energy gamma rays, they can carry more energy in them than the Sun will put out in its entire lifetime. They are so energetic we can see them clear across the Universe, and having one too close would be bad.
Neat blog entry from the BA today.

I say we build an earth sized shield and launch it out so it's between there and us.

Luckily I'm already stocked up on plastic sheeting and duct tape.

If one of them things exploded today wouldn't it still be 8 thousand (or way more) years before anything reached us?

Yes, but it may have exploded 8000 years - 1 day ago, and we won't find out until tomorrow when the sleet of hard radiation strips our atmosphere away and turns you into a nice mush before scattering your component atoms to the solar winds.

We are looking back into the past basically... we know that 8000 yrs ago it hadnt blown yet...

WE would get hit with the burst as soon as we saw it....

I sure hope so.

When SARS broke out I panicked and ran out and bought a ton of those.

I had no idea what I was going to do with all the damned things.

Well when you put it that way, now I really am scared.

But as long as it's quick. I don't want to have to wait around starving to death and fending off emboldened wildlife.

At the time, I worked at a paint factory. Thanks to a-holes like you, we couldn't keep up our supply of dust masks. The main ingredients of paint are water and a very fine type of calcium carbonate powder.

Locke, I finally have a legit reason to kill you. you might wanna tie up any loose ends...
