Spanking, just like any other way of punishment, can be detrimental when used wrong. It can be very effective if used properly, but as children gain more understanding, other punshments may be more effective. Different kids require different method of discipline.

In the interests of full disclosure I do not have children.

I can understand some parents using it on rare occasion when kids are young, but I think once you can reason with them to some degree, it's better to show them why their actions are wrong instead of just spanking them. Hopefully when they're older you've trained them to reason for themselves.

Children only respect the whip or the fist that holds it.

I have no doubt spanking can be effective in really limited circumstances.

I can't imagine being convinced spanking is necessary.

And I'd say the older kids get, the less effective it will be. Already at 4 my kid knows when he's going to face the music for his actions. on occasion he does it anyway, because thats what kids do. Based on my limited experience with kids, by the time they are 4-6, spanking would be a waste of time.

I'm with you, both in that I have no kids, and agree with you. I've watched my friends raise their kids using different methods, and the most effective measure I've seen from them has been sending the kids to their rooms and telling them to think about what they did wrong and why mom and dad are so upset. I'm thinking it works so well because the threat of a spanking is still there, but mainly because the parent/child relationship is strong enough that the thought of upsetting their parents is enough to make the kids change their behavior. These parents that do this I have never seen actually have to spank their kids, and usually after a while the kids come out of the room crying and seemingly truly apologetic and upset.
Of course it could all be just an act in order to avoid the spanking. Kids aren't dumb

Man... As a child, I think I broke every rule in the book. I did things that, if I were the parent, I'd consider snipping off pinky toes with side cutters. Ie, throwing a dead, rotting fish at my neighbour's window, which subsequently knocked the screen out, hence allowing the carcass entry into their home.
Wow. What would I do to my child if I had to answer the door to an enraged neighbour??

I used to love it when my parents sent my to my room, all my stuff was there.

The biggest threat though was in combination.

"Go to your room and just you wait until your father gets home"

I rarely made the same mistake twice, and I certainly didn't cross my old man very often.

Just tell your kids that there is an evil spirit that lives in the furnace. Then when they're bad, lock them in the furnace room for a few minutes.

And don't forget to turn the thermostat up a tad so it makes that "poof" sound.

well, that would probably keep them from turning into sexual deviants. Might have to worry about them becoming serial killers though. Or christians.

Basement dweller, are ya? Yeah I had that power once. Of course, the day I exercised it, a big padlock showed up soon after...

How about this instead...sexual deviance is in the open...it doesnt have to be hidden any longer due to religious reasons or lack thereof.

Seriously folks...spanking is never an option. If a child escalates to a moment that YOU think its necessary, walk away. Come back in a moment of sanity and deal with it as a good parent would. There is nothing that works better than a parent who is lucid and clear of voice who has the ability to explain to a child the rights and wrongs of a situation. If you have run out of things to say/do then research or go talk to someone else.
My parents were pro spanking and would haul out the strap first and ask questions later. It just made me hate them at that moment...and I mean hate. I also learned real fast that I could create time and space by burying their weapons of choice in the field across the street the moment they turned their back.
