Default Selfish?

Wednesday night, I came down with what I thought was a pretty severe stomach flu. Today, I went to the hospital because the nausea and dizziness wasn't getting better. Turns out, I don't have a stomach flu but Benign Positional Vertigo which is not contagious and will go away in a few weeks. They can treat the most severe symptoms so that I can do normal things with care, but because of the inner ear problem, I'm unbalanced and tend to look like I'm drunk. People are staring.

So. My oldest daughter wants to go shopping for her May Queen dress, and I have a driver, but I'm concerned about people staring. Not for my sake - I could not care less, but she's 15 and people staring at her mother is embarassing. I could ask her aunt to take her, but then I'd miss out. Am I being selfish?

I think you should consult with your Daughter and see if she wants you to go with her. Explain what is currently happening when you go out and let her make the decision - just don't be upset if she says she doesn't want you to go.

I would talk to your daughter first and explain the reasons why you are hesitant to take her shopping. I'm sure she'll understand and chances are she might even suggest it's better if her aunt takes her.

Would it be more, or less embarassing for your daughter if you hopped in a wheelchair?

No. But I'm coming from the perspective of wanting to share in as many of my kids' special occasions as possible.

Is your daughter the sort that'd be embarrassed by this? If so, I'd bring a cane or a walker along so it's apparent that you're convalescing and not impaired.

I hope you get well soon.

You get it! YAY! I want to share these occasions too.

I'm a fairly boisterous person normally and most of the time she grins when I sing outloud at the grocery store. She usually finds my antics amusing. However, most people smile along with her when I put on a show. I'm not quite sure that this is the same. But the wheelchair idea might work.

I thought briefly about posting a sign on my back - "I'm not drunk, just happy." But that might be pushing it.

Thanks for the ideas.

Some teenage boys dig drunk moms.

I was thinking the same thing, Wheelchair/Cane/Walker...that might be a good compromise.

Sounds like you usually look drunk anyway
